| | | I would like to learn some parkour, as I have a constantly hurting knee and fear of hurting it more limits my jumping skills ( I can't jump from more than 50 cm whereas I used to jump down from 2 m) so I need some fallberaking skillz. And soing some PK would be good for my health as well. Maybe an idea for Europex to do some PK clinics. Tijmen P.S. I'm not coming to Europex, too many lathe without plaster exams [last edit 5/7/2005 1:55 PM by IIVQ - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by bobtheallmighty I dont see how this has very much to do with UE. When I am exploring I don't find my self trying to clear obstacles in a fluid manner. Infact I rather like taking my time, or even finding routs around the obstacles. Rushing through a site in a "fluid manner" just isn't UE. Sure some of the "moves" like the roll, and the wall run are useful, but thay are not PK exclusive. I learned to roll as part of my Kung-fu training and im sure kung-fu has been around much longer then PK. as for the majority of the moves thay are useless for UE, and more for just show. aside from all that i think its important to take things slow at a UE site, you dont want to vault or climb off of anything you arent sure of, it could collapse on you. |
You're kind of missing the point here. In the fitness thread, nobody was talking about going to abandoned hospitals to bench press, and I'm sure nobody here's talking about visiting sites for the sole purpose of running around and doing vaults. And yes, PK rolls are adapted from marshall arts. Probably other moves too, no doubt. It's just not relevant.

Parkour's a totally fun thing to get into. It's not really about jumping from hights, but it will teach you to land better. And it's absolutely good for your health. Just make sure you're properly warmed up when you go out. Here's a handy link: http://www.urbanfr...s/fundamentals.htm

| | | Is´nt climbing a better thing to practice for ue? seriously, i´ve never had any use of these strange Pk-moves while exploring, however, my climbing skills often comes in handy. So i would recommend climbing rather then Pk.

| | | Prompted by coldcoldwater's comment, I had to watch some of the videos on that site. It reminds me of Hardcore shows. Some people think it looks silly, and some people find it mesmarizing. I call it impressive, myself, but they do kinda look like little monkies flying around, so I could see why you could say it looks silly.

I think there's a thing or two to learn from the Parkour dudes. I mean, nobody needs to do a palm-spin on a completely vertical wall while exploring, but the balance, jumping, and landing techniques could come in handy.

| | | yeah you´re right, i meant those palm-spins and stuff like that. Sure it good for balance and stuff like that, but there are many ways to gain those skills, not just through Pk. Don´t get me wrong, i have nothing against Parkour, but i just don´t think you can say that ue involves parkour

Climbing is a _BIG_ part of PK. The three basics of PK are Run, Jump, CLIMB! Yeesh.

| | | an excellent example of a situation where pk and ue meet: in one of the recent ue missions we did, there was drop, from one rooftop to the next, of about ten feet, and the buildings were separated by an alley about four feet wide, and twenty or twenty five feet deep, closed at both ends. the best part is, we had to jump it and then get to the next building over as quickly and as quietly as possible. i'm sure we could have anchored our rope at the top, then descended quietly, but kicking off the wall to get to the other building would have been maybe a bit skecthy, and it would involve stepping on the sheet-metal edge, which results in that loud metallic popping sound. my point is, its an extremely useful skill for some urbexplorers. sometimes one doesnt have the time or the gear to abseil, sometimes one needs to run along a wall to get over a gap or gain a bit of extra height to reach something, and sometimes escaping quickly and quietly (fluidly) is a lot easier than trying to socially engineer an angry caffeinated police officer at four in the am. also its damn fun.

| | | Here are a few ways that parkour can benefeit your urban exploration experience:
- Improves your balance
- Increases your climbing skills and speed
- Increased awareness of your environment
- Increased awareness of your body and it's capabilities
The list goes on and on. However, to end this post, I will mention that parkour is also known as the "art of escape", and since UE can very often put you in compromising situations (as far as the authorities are concerned) you shouldn't have to stretch your imagination to see where parkour could help.
"A (Natural Method) session is composed of exercises belonging to the ten fundamental groups; walking, running, jumping, quadrupedal movement, climbing, equilibrism, throwing, lifting, defending and swimming." -George Hébert (1875-1957) |

| | | Me and my buddy Charrellz have used "Cat to Cats" to get on the top of buildings once or twice. I think if nothing else, everyone should learn how to land properly from a high fall and how to roll so you don't kill yourself. That, and Parkour is just awesome.
Rest in Peace, Ninjalicious. I know that wherever you are, you're finding the best sites for us already. |

| | | Generally, I rock the parkour to get in the building, as ground floor entrances tend to be boarded up around here. Once inside, it's nice and slow from there. Parkour is handy, but not usually necessary. Though it is a fun warm-up pre-UE to get the blood going.

| | | I got distracted at Purgatory Chasm in Mass today, doing Parkour over the rocks, and trying to see how fast I could run through there without stopping or falling. There really isn't much to explore there anyways. I can think of a lot of times I've just gotten excited UEing, and used parkour techniques to get to second floors, over holes/obstacles, and into hard to reach places. | | | OIM just getting into parkour for its own sake, but Iv always used jumps and rolls in UE, fuck, just a quick 5 second scale over a fence and your out of sigh/suspicion, instead of dragging a pallet from 2 blocks away and stacking it up and climbing over. And its alot of fun
