| | | When you are out exploring, what is the best way to keep yourself hydrated? Do you carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go?Or do you carry a Hydration Pack. I carry a Hydration pack similar to the one on this website below. It holds around 3 L of water, and has enough space to fit your basic UE equipment. Flashlights, FRS,Gloves etc.It is more comfortable than regular backpacks, and I feel I have more mobility with these packs compared to other backpacks.Has anyone else used these type of packs for UE before? If so what are your experiences with them. http://www.camelback.com/

| | | I have a hydration pack for my regular sized back pack. (ok, it popped and I need a new one) I loved it. Stayed much more hydrated than with a water bottle. The only problem I ran into was not wanting to drink out of a tube that has been bashing around an abandonment. My usual solution was to pull a little water into my mouth, swish it around the tube, spit it out and then drink. A covered water bottle is a little nicer in those situations.

| | | I used to pack a 2L bottle of water in my backpack, which provided ample capacity but was very inconvenient to use and took up far too much room in my bag. I bought a camelbak-style water pouch that I could stuff into my existing bag for a holiday, and it's replaced the bottle ever since. My only problems are it doesn't carry as much water as the bottle (1.5L), the mouthpiece on the hose tends to get cobwebs and plaster and other muck stuck to it, and once the hose popped off inside my bag and soaked everything. I'd also say the 90 degree adapter for the mouthpiece end of the hose is a must, it's surprisingly difficult to hold in your mouth otherwise. Beats the hell out of a water bottle for convenience though, especially how all your other kit just squidges around it. edit: i spel gud. [last edit 4/27/2005 10:37 PM by wooble - edited 1 times]

| | | The one thing I'd have a problem with Camelbaks for UE are the spout. Can you get/make some sort of cover for it? Or just wear it under your clothing? I wouldn't want to be biting down on a dusty nozzle in a condemned building. I imagine arsenic tastes as bad as asbestos smells.

| | | Usually just a bottle, but after seeing those they look like a pretty good investment. I'm digging the M.U.L.E pack by them.

| | | If alcohol's your thang, CamelBak has come up with a dual-bag system and two nozzles that splice with a valve, so you can not only have your Rum and Coke, you can dial in the strength of the mix you want. I forget the name of it, but it was a featured product in Outside Magazine a couple years back.

| | | I have got the Camelbak MULE. I use mine for most outdoor things I do. I have used mine during paintball. (usually hide it underneath a layer of clothing), mountain biking, rollerblading, hiking. You can use it for almost anything. It carrys 100 oz or 3 litres of water. I usually carry water in mine. As for dust getting on the nozzle, I have not had a real problem with it because I usually keep the nozzle tucked away behind one of the tube holding straps on the shoulder. If you are concerned about dust, or any harmful dust getting on the nozzle, there is a Thermal Control Kit which has a mouthpiece cover for around $16 USD.

| | | Me and the guys in my military unit all chipped in for these (military funding wouldn't cover such a thing, of course) for when we are out on training or if we get deployed somewhere hot and toasty. They work great. They aren't bulky at all, and they keep the water cool for a while. It's a good investment if you plan on UE'ing on a really hot day in a remote place where you might spend a lot of time.

| | | I usually just bring a water bottle or canteen, I've thought about buying a camelback but only on longer trips where I run out of water I recently got a filter bottle (from a camping / survival magazine). It removes giardia, bacteria and other contaminants and makes questionable stream water safe to drink. I don't know if I'd try it with drain water, but for long outdoor hikes it's great.

| | | I bring a bottle of water, the only thing keeping me from a Camelback is the price. It seems that it would be nice to have one, easier to get some fluid from then having to unzip the backpack and take out the waterbottle.

| | | I resisted the hydration pack / Camelbak trend thing for years but bought one recently and I love it. Got a 70oz built into a functional pack (Camelbak HAWG) great for long hikes. Havent got the urethane taste out of it yet and you gotta clean it are the only downsides.
