| | | I've noticed a lot of you posted car related UE things in the forums. I was wondering if many people use bicycles as transportation for UE? From my bicycle I tend to notice my surroundings a lot more. I use it to wander around and do my recon work. Think about it, a slow moving bicycle is a lot less suspicious than a slow moving car. A bike chained in a random place never gets a second look but a car parked outside an abandoned structure looks suspicious. With a bike you can park/chain it on site or near the site you plan to explore. Also bikes don't have license plates, so you can't be easily tracked. How many times do you notice bikes around town, bikes are much more low profile than autos. [last edit 4/21/2005 11:41 PM by Abe Bandon - edited 1 times]

| | | Depending on the accessibility of the locations I go to, I would prefer using my mountain bike instead of my vehicle. Main reasons why I don't like to use my vehicle is.. 1. Afraid of some idiot having fun trying to slash my tires, or vandalize my vehicle. And alot of places I do go, even though I carry a Cell phone and FRS, I do not wanted to be stranded. 2. The license plate issue is not a major issue with me, but in some cases, especially in the city, I would prefer to bike it instead of driving. 3. I can get anywhere with my bike. It is a heavy-duty mountain bike with suspension that is worth a few thousand dollars with all the upgrades put into it. Whether it be in the middle of nowhere, or in the city, it is easy to hide, and easy to get around on.

| | | Exactly, a bicycle is very versatile in any urban environment. I generally don't use my mountain bike for UE though I don't want to have my nice Kona doing anything but hitting the trails. I use this old no name full fendered cruiser for UE stuff, it's got a rear rack if I don't want to wear my pack on my shoulders and it's the kind of crusty old looking POS that you'd be a fool to try to steal it. It is tried and true, I can jump curbs and do anything I need it to in traffic.

| | | Assumingly then you guys do your urbex alone? I go out on my bike a lot, but as for exploring with it... I dunno. Doubtful. unless the person I was exploring with could keep up with me on another bike, in which case it would be ideal for some locaions.

| | | Not having alternative wheels, my bike is usually how I get to and from sites (Public transport is not for people who have been walking through ditches). I tend to park quite a way away from where I intend to explore though. If I needed to Plan-B, I wouldn't want to have to faff around with bike locks before making my getaway.

| | | being without a drivers license, walking has usually been my mode of transportation, but if im going any distance a bike is nice. Btu then again, i enjoy a nice long walk. And it would probably help if my bike wasnt falling apart.

| | | Personally, I use my old Giant mt. bike for two reasons. One- I cant drive (stupid age) Two- my mt. bike doesn't fit right, it is way too small and the seat is just about as high as it goes. If someone saw it sitting in a ditch beside the building im looking through it tends to be an effect of "wow, that must be a crappy old bike..." But I love my mt. bike. I just added a cell holder (made by your's trueily, because im cheep) And i can do just about any trick/getaway I want in it because I have been riding it forever its like another limb its become mussle memory how to do tricks with it. -Knife

How close can you go?
| | Re: Bicycles and UE <Reply # 8 on 4/22/2005 6:31 AM >
| | | Though all my major explorations to distant sites have been made by car, every now and then I jump on my bike, Cannondale F500, and drive around the countryside, looking for abandonements, mostly old houses. If I'm driving a car and happen to notice an abandoned house, I have to turn back, park and hide the car somewhere and walk to the site. Though my car is relatively small, it's still an annoyance. The bicycle can just be tossed to nearest bush. It's also much slower; a building hidden by the trees might go unnoticed with a car. And driving long distances keeps me from getting fat...

| | | I'd cycle if it was sub-5 miles (I hate cycling on paved roads), but beyond that my trusty old internal combustion-powered heap will do, it blends well too because it's small and rotting.

| | | My bike is all I have(Sekai 5000). And it beats the hell out of any car in the city so.... yeah, that's much less suspicious and more efficient unless I'm exploring more than 20 miles away. [last edit 4/22/2005 6:30 PM by AdventureGrime - edited 1 times]

| | | I don't own a car, so I bike pretty much everywhere, including wherever I am exploring. Versatile, low-key, and a lot of my "discoveries" have been found during long meandering weekend rides--something i probably wouldn't do if I had a car. The only problem is that I sometimes explore stuff a good distance away from my apartment, so after an hour or so ride and 4 hours of exploring, I'm beat...then I remember I have to ride back home. I moderate the "Bicycle Forum" on UER--look in the User's Boards section. It's open to all, and it could use more content like what is in this thread. You're all invited to join. | | | I, too, belong to the "Don't Have a Car, But Compensates With a Bike" club (DHCBCWB, don't forget, deadline for dues is coming up soon). Unfortunately, my bike is pretty lame: a WalMart Schwinn mountain bike. But to be fair, it regularly gets me to where I need to be, often in excess of 20 miles. I'm looking for a cheap (sub-$500) road bike to buy this summer, so if any of you guys have any recommendations, share them! But yeah, the bicycle is quite conducive to exploring. Edit: I meant to include a link to this: http://www.actionsquad.org/fordtrip1.htm. Excerpt: "First, the two gals that had promised to go with bailed out at around 11:00 PM, leaving us without a ride and with two people. So we were faced with the prospect of sitting home all night drinking with my roommate and his band … which would be fun, except that we were keyed up to give the Ford tunnels another attempt (we'd tried to find the entry point before and failed). So, we decided we would ride our bikes from my home in Minneapolis to the Ford Plant in Saint Paul. When we arrived quite awhile later, we hid the bikes and started to look for a hole in the barbed wire fence that stood between us and the area that seemed most likely to feature an entrance to the tunnels." | | | Using a bike for exploring is a lot more fun i say. You cant go as far or to as many locations as you could if you have a car. But when you've got a long drain which is just a bit too small for you to stand up in. Racing along it on a bike is a lot of fun. Also in the city you can get through all the back ally's faster and into places that you would miss with a car. And the one thing that has saved me quite a few times when trying to get onto the roof of active locations is that you just pertend to be a bike courier and they normally wont question you. But if you do get caught and questioned then saying your a courier can let you get away with having lots of differnt breaking and entering tools. Just say they are to repair the bike.

A bit later the story mentions the Action Squad folks riding their bikes into the Ford Plant site past security cameras, the theory being that if they rode fast they would not be spotted. It worked. Try doing THAT with a car!
