New to UE, a few questions
< on 4/21/2005 12:10 AM >
Posted on Forum: Infiltration Forums

Hi Everyone!

Very excited to get into this. I've been into the "espionage/stealth scene" For a while now and its very interesting. Ok Now the questions:

1.) For my first time out, What should I do?

2.) Locks- For the life of me I can't pick them. Any tips or alternate methods for getting through a locked door? I was thinking a small explosive charge inserted into the lock?

3.) In Social Engineering, could multiple layers of clothing be useful? Say someone spots you and you can't work your way outta it. You take off the first layer and add a hat and completely change your outter appearance. I got this idea from my health teacher. He says in a split second the human mind picks up the colors first. just wondering

Thanks in advance.

For your first time out, you should try to meet some experienced explorers in your area. They can give you some great tips and the benefit of experience.

I myself would never cut or break a lock, there is almost always another way in. Where are you getting the explosive to blow open this lock with? How much noise and how much attention do you think that will attract?

The layers of clothing is a neat idea, a bit hard to explain to a cop if you do get caught.

My two cents.

1) Explore! A site doesn't have to be dangerous or illegal to be fun.

2) Find another way in. If you start doing the irreversible, it gives explorers a bad name, and the inevitable tighter security makes things harder for everybody.

3) Possibly, but you'll have a hard time running anywhere in five sweaters. I guess a reversible top, or a t-shirt and hat you can stow could be handy. It all depends on your locale and Plan-B preference.

Edit: Oh yeah.. Hi!

1. Go with someone who knows the ropes.
2. Alternative: find another way in. As for the 'explosive charge', uh, guy, I think you've played too many hours of Splinter Cell.
3. That might work, but you're 14, so I'm not sure how well you'll be able to Social adults. Yet.....

  • Go with somebody who knows the ropes.

  • Explosives = noise. Noise = unwanted attention. Unwanted attention = bad.

  • Considering you have to carry your outfits, security is not likely going to buy your "it's not me story."

hehe yeah perhaps too much splinter cell but i did manage to blow a few simple locks around my house. I used some plastic glue used for models and some ground up rocket engine fuel. blew it open but left too much trace only use I could forsee for these are quick situations when i need a lot of fire power fast.

I've got a few places spotted already. An abandoned hospital only problem is abestos, an abandoned movie theater, and an old abandoned hotel.

As for the locks again, anyway to make remedial picks? I thought about these old dentist picks they sell at a hardware store here and a thin screw driver.

Here in Silver City there is a huge ditch made by a flood in the 1800s. It travels all through out the city perhaps I could explore there. Or I could scout out WNMU a little.

    Thanks for all the feedback,

Well, if you've done it, and you know it works, make a video for us. I'd like to see that.

But seriously, a lot of people on here don't like the idea of damaging things/breaking into places to get access. If you're going to do it, you might want to keep that to yourself.

I've got a few places spotted already. An abandoned hospital only problem is abestos, an abandoned movie theater, and an old abandoned hotel.

Asbestos isn't a big concern, as long as you take precautions... even a simple dust mask will help a lot, and that's recommended anyways.

Yes, you can modify dental picks to make a set of picks. Work well. Try www.lockpicking.nl for hints and tips.

3M make some good respirators apparently. I'm still trying to find out if the less bulky cyclist's air filters cut the mustard with asbestos.

There's a guy here who uses bristles from road-sweepers to pick locks with.

For chrissake, don't blow up any locks, and I can't imagine a situation where you'd need "fire power fast". Find ways in that you can put back how you found them, or that don't require any modification at all. The vast majority of the time there's going to be a way into a place that doesn't even require doing anything to a lock. For those few cases where it does, learn how to pick. You just need practice and I can guarantee that you won't blow your fingers off with picks, and picking a lock a few times isn't going to destroy it.

Before the howler monkeys start, yes these are my personal views and if you want to call them ethics, whatever. But it's also good common sense. You go around blowing up locks and you're into B&E/property damage territory (read: way way more serious than a tresspassing ticket). Others have also already given you some compelling reasons (tightening of security, for instance), and *most* people who consider themselves Urban Explorers follow a "do no harm" type of code.

Now, on picks... you can purchase a starter set online for $12 shipped from lockpicksonline.com. They are quality spring steel and will get you through most pin tumbler locks with some practice.

On the respirator, Home Depot and similar stores sell half-face respirators for $25 that will filter out most pigeon shit dust, asbestos, lead and mold spores. Look for P100-rated stuff. Dust masks can help with large particulate but asbestos fibers are so small they'll go straight through most dust masks.

You should definitely try to meet up with some other explorers in your area. The hobby is something which I think most people are capable of doing at some level, but there is some basic knowledge that you only gain through either experience or going with someone else who's experienced.

I'm going to assume this isn't a troll for now...

yes after a few trials with the explosive I ruled it out. the fact that it causes damage bothers me. Damaging things doesn't sit right with me.

As for buying picks I don't think my parents will be too comfortable with that. So of to the shop to work on some picks. A face mask sounds like a must have.

Now that we got past that:

What should I pack in a kit? and What should I pack it in?
I have a woodland camo tactical vest that could be used. That would be hard to explain to the higher authorities

There's several threads in the Tuts section about what people put in their pack, although some of it is kinda skirting the edge of insanity. Personally I have oodles of camera equipment, but at a minimum, I'd say a flashlight, backup flashlight, and some water. Also, a pair of gloves would be a wise investment.

This seems more like a Tuts thread now so I'll move it there.

    thanks servo,

I've got a new idea for a pick to practice with.
I own a blowgun which has these long rather hard metal darts.

I'm gonna try and shape it properly and use some other tool as a tension wrench. I'll probably practice on a simple padlock.

Yes I heard of that method. My father has the XPR model of the dremel tool. I'll have to look into that.

I think I've worked out a practice exercise. I think I'll go on a walk threw the sewer system here. rather open and large openings at that.

Is it a storm drain or a sewer? There is a big difference. I will not go into a sewer, but storm drains no problem. Sewers can have fast flowing water, and trapped gas pockets that be ignited or asphyxiate you.
