|  | | | Hey Amanita, are you sure it was in Berlin? I remember watching Anne Troake's "Pretty Big Dig", a ballet for cranes on CBC awhile ago. The video used to be up on the web, but I couldn't find it for you guys. I thought it was a really cool idea, making the gracefullness of that type of heavy machinery shine through. Hope someone can find a copy and post a link, it's worth checking out.

| | | | This is a story from a crane accident that I actually saw. Just to give the situation, I was on watch in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard just watching as they were dismantaling one of their older cranes.. nothing too big, well they starting taking the main cab off of the support section that would move on rail road tracks and they got it above the barge in the water, now this was a floating barge crane that was doing the dismantling, pretty good size... Well, first thing I heard was a LOUD snap, then the crane just started falling over sideways with the cab still in tow and pretty high up... it fell straight into the river there with one hell of a crash and splash... I remember calling below to my duty officer, 'Duty Officer, Topside... The Crane just fucken fell into the water.' Not suppose to be cursing over communications, but well, that slipped... Became a pretty big incident, alot of oil and stuff, but thankfully they got it sealed of really fast. Here is a link that talks about it alittle.

I do remember seeing something on 20/20 about ballet dancing cranes years ago. It was pretty damned cool.
Cranes in general are so graceful- no wonder I want to operate one. Earthmoving equipment just doesn't do it for me that way.

In the early 80's,a good friend of mine moved to Miami to do a project of a huge mural....as an artist he tried to have is own exhibitition.....almost no one showed up so he climbed the crane that was just besides the art gallery,reciting Jim Morrison's poetry to get some attention....The police came and my poor (merely stupid ) friend spent the night in jail trying to convince all the psychologists that he had no intention of commiting suicide...he was not charged and next morning there was an article on him "poor craving misunderstood artist blablabla" with a picture..The same night, the art gallery was full and he sold a lot !!!
That was crazy, hopefully that ended well . In that era ,events like this were very popular.... (he is very quiet now)
If I find the article,,and a scanner,I'll post it...
ps I saw the Crane's ballet.....amazing!!!
