|  | | | How do you know if an electric fence it on without touching it! I was just going to explore this old building the other night when I came across this electric fence. The only reason I knew it was electic was because it said danger high voltage! How do you know if it is on or not?

You could always toss something conductive at it. Be sure it touches at least 2 points at once. It's supposed to be obvious.
Depending on the power running through, electric fences aren't necessarily all that bad. We used to have one on our farm and my brothers and I would go and see who could hold it for the longest.

| | | | Electric fencers (at least the ones used for livestock) are designed to give you a jolt of high voltage with low current. Don't try to sure a voltmeter on it. If you really want to check it you can go to a Co-op store and buy an electric fence tester. I used to make my own using a neon night and a few resisters. Another trick is to get a long spike and attach a wire to it. Push the spike into the ground and hold the insulated wire to the fence and look and listen for the arc. There's other tricks like just listening to a cheap AM radio that is close to the fence.....you'll hear the arcing at approx. 3 second intervals. When the weather is humid, you'll hear louder arcing. I used to get shocks at least once a week....it won't hurt you, but will give you a good jolt depending on the humidity and the type of shoes you have on.

| | | | If it is being used for livestock and not security: Walk around it and you will eventually find a area where the wires are not attached to insulators on the fence post but to plastic handles that clip to the wire. These are safe to touch and are normally used to gain access, just grab the handle and move the wire out of your way. Just be careful no livestock try to take a run for freedom.
Also; there are some types of livestock that do not enjoy company; be careful and watch your back.

I have a couple of old battery operated fencers (that were made by the Canadian Tire Corp.) that were designed to be used with a 6V dry cell. At times, I've hooked them up to a 12V car battery and I know by doing impedance calculations they're well over 20,000 volts. I've also hooked up a filtered square wave generator to a neon sign transformer to produce the arcs that you see in horror movies. Most areas in North America outlaw the use of electric fence with the exception being for agricultural purposes or government use.

Livestock fences as noted are hi volt low amp deals with a straight solid wire or two suspended by insulators and driven by a battery or a transformer. They use them in parts of Texas a lot to keep cattle from bustin down the barbed wire and wooden post type fences. I touched a rifle I was carryin to one by accident and it felt like someone slapped my arm with a baseball bat. It was very stout. Has to be to get a 1500lb steers attention but'll knock the fool out of a man. It ran off a small AC transformer.
The commercial electrical fences I have seen will have a row or two or three of straight wire on insulated standoffs usually on the inside of a chain link fence. I dont know how much juice they carry but the fences almost always proclaim to be high voltage and have danger and pelligro posted all over, at least for the deterrent effect.

I don't know it it would work with a 10kV electric fence, but with 400kV and 132kV overhead power lines, you can often get a fluorescent light tube to light from the EM radiation field just by planting it in the ground underneath the wires. (it won't work if you stand too near it because you conduct electricity better then the tube does)

If you watched MythBusters Jamie got a 10kV through his chest and he was fine, The current must have been below 35mA cause more than than can and should cause cardiac arrest/damage.
Not that I'm saying you should go around touching fences like this, just _be_carefull_!!!
Or maybe pickup a cheap inductance tester. Shows current without touching anything, gotta get a sensitive one though.
