What should I wear?

I've never gone exploring like this before and I'm new to it. What do I wear? Would a BDU be sufficient?

You need to learn to search at least a little before asling common questions. To answer your question quickly and cover all the bases without writing a book, wear what seems right for the task at hand and take into consideration several factors, such as:

  • weight
  • ruggedness (long sleeves or short, denim or thin poly, scratch & bump protection, etc.)
  • outward appearance to others (don't explore utility tunnels wearing a turban these days)
  • ability to blend in with surrounding terrain, if needed and doesn't conflict badly with above guideline
  • warmth/coolness
  • the list could go on forever...

BDUs are great if nobody will see you and worry about a guy sneaking around in BDUs. It's hard to play lost tourist if you've got black or camo BDUs on and are sneaking around some off-limits area with flashlights and a camera. I'd avoid them personally. Ask Jester if you are still curious about the "to camo/not to camo" aspect of it all.

Look at these threads to get some relevant info and discussion from earlier on:

it just all depends on what you plan on doing. make your attire suit where and what you do. krazy said it very well.

Hey, this is the perfect spot for my review of some pants I just bought. These things are great, because they are camo and have a million pockets, yet won't raise suspicion as they are from a well known designer clothing line. Copied from my site:

Hey, for all you urban exploring/adventurer types out there that need a good pair of pants, take note of the 7 oz. Air Infantry Cargo Pants from Abercromie and Fitch. Bear with me. The material is good. There are tons of pockets with push-studs, not buttons. You can get them in camo, khaki, or OD. They have blousing tabs on the legs and a draw string on a waste. The belt loops are just wide enough to accept a pistol/emergency rappelling belt. Stress points have doubled up material and are double stitched. There are pen sleeves and gear loops as well. Just cut off all the A&F tabs and you have a pair of sterile field pants that can haul a ton of gear. The drawback: The $60 price tag.

Normally I wouldn't be caught dead in A&F, but these pants are great once you remove all logos.

I've always had good luck with an old leather jacket, dark jeans and a sweatshirt.

Nice and stealthy for night trips (except in the winter time of course), and you look like a nice respectable citizen if you have to stop off at a 711 for drinkage.

Whatever you do don't go for anything to baggy. I saw a friend of mine get hung on a barb wire fence in excessively baggy camos.

I'm working on a modular outfit right now that someone might be tempted to think about. A basic pair of cargo pants made from a heavy-grade twill and whatever over-shirt you might want (I'm working on getting a vest + attachable sleeves getup going). On them, on strategic places on both the pants and top, stitch strips of heavy-duty velcro (get twice as much velcro as you'll need, because there are always places that you can put more to, and you'll need the extra pieces). Make sure that you put strips around the waist and ankles of the pants, and along the shoulders and waistline of the vest or whatnot.

For the first set of camo gear, get random scraps of black/dark blue/etc... hiding colors in random shapes. Stitch the pieces of velcro to them so that, basically, you can throw them on your clothes for a makeshift ghillie suit. Good for outdoor hiding/scouting, etc... For the second set, get colors that would seemingly match the clothes and stitch the velcro to it, making sure to keep the pieces just big enough to cover the velcro patches. These are your typical 'Hey, what's up, I'm just here chillaxin, don't mind me, these clothes are just made kewl like this thankyouverymuchgoodbye' patches.

Benefits:
* Easy change from urban to camo and back again, rather quickly if necessary.
* Provides better-than-average hiding capabilities in grass/woods/etc when in 'ghillie-mode'

Drawbacks:
* May be bulky to carry around patches (still working this bug out)
* Potential for snagging on barbed wire fences, nails, etc... possible when in camo, unlikely in urban.

Thoughts? Feedback?

After I get it all put together, I'll get some pics and throw them up here.

I agree that excessively baggy can be bad. I tore my absolute favorite pair of UE pants (just generic cargo pants) on a barb wire fence dodging police. I like things with lots and lots of pockets. I like it better than a vest. Just my preference. Batteries, QuickClot, utility tool, etc. all gets thrown in and off I go. You will never get a general consensus on what to wear. Everyone has their own ideas and preferences and it's ultimately up to you to find out what you like.

Intersting idea. I would be worried about it picking up lots of garbage... like parts of plants that stick well to regular clothes anyway. And remember sound.

Yeah, the crap that might stick to it would possibly be an issue... I'm not totally sure yet though. I'll have to play with it some, maybe I'll just make a vest out of it first and see how well that works.
