Flashlight comparison

Took my lights and my camera out for a walk tonight. Here's the results:

From left to right:

1) a collection of vent pipes at a range of around 45 feet and lit only by ambient city lighting.

2) The scene lit by a 2x AA pocket Maglite. On alkaline batteries, output will reduce to half of the initial value within 30 minutes.

3) Illumination from a 2D full-size Maglite. The light will dim to 50% brightness within an hour when using alkaline batteries.

4) Illumination from a Streamlight Propolymer 4AA Luxeon flashlight. This is a Luxeon I LED light that runs for 3.5 hours on 4 AA batteries. It is fully regulated and brightness will not dim until after the 3.5 hour mark. Regulated runtime on NiMh rechargables hasn't been tested, but might be on the order of six hours. Lightweight and around 3/4th the size of a 2D Maglite.

5) Illumination from an Inova T3. The Inova T3 is a Luxeon III LED flashlight powered by two CR123A lithium batteries. Total runtime is two hours at full brightness, followed by at least three more hours of limited output. Slightly larger than a 2 AA Maglite.

Arguments that LED lights have no range are grossly in error.

Agreed, I just picked up a Coast Tac Torch LED flashlight. It's a 1.25watt output with some sort of system they call Lenser that refocuses the LED, and I haven't been able to find a place large enough to test the full range. I'm guessing its at least the range of a mag light.

Is this what you have? These people make pretty good lights, but be advised that they're most definitely not water resistant. Not good lights to take draining or caving.

Yea, thats the light I'm using now. I don't see any sort of O Ring on it so I doubt it's waterproof. Nonetheless it's a great light.
