Who's in the bunker?

Roight.

Well there is this buker that we are trying to find a way into and we don't seem to be getting anywhere at the moment. The front of the place is now nothing more than a pile of rubble.

Now. I'd like to know HOW bunkers in Canada are built. You know, the way the tunnels into them work et al. If anyone who has been to one or on a military tour and has some info I would love to hear from you. ^-^

Can't get into a bunker? Not like they were built to keep people (and bombs!) out, or anything

Never been on any official-type tours, but I do have a bit of experience with some of the military stuff. I did manage to pry my way into one of the bunkers in Edmonton a while ago. It was small, but nifty.

The Canadian bunkers I've heard of are essentially large concrete boxes in the ground. Larger ones have multiple levels and are more extensive. As a general rule, each bunker has at least two entrances- so search high and low for concrete! I did hear a rumor of tunnels connecting to Alberta's main bunker, but I haven't verified this yet.

Some trivia: Did you know that every Canadian province (with the exception of Sask, NB, PEI, and one other) all had a command bunker built for them? Alberta's central command bunker was demolished before I had the chance to explore it, unfortunately. Each province will probably also have some smaller designated shelters scattered about.

I wish everyone luck with bunker-related explorations.

Know where the one for the Yukon Terrirory is (or if they had one)?

Asher: look for an emercency exit hatch or air vent, sometimes they were combined. If the local government sealed the place then they could have placed rocks or concrete slab on top of such an exit, or it could only be openable from the inside. I read that in some US missile silos they consisted of a metal pipe with a ladder, with the top half full of sand. You open a hatch halfway up the pipe (below the sand) then pull a lever releasing the sand to fall into the lower half. After that you can re-enter the pipe and climb up to the surface.

I'm not trying to discourage you, just be aware that the hatch might not be too obvious.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Asher: Is this the same bunker that Exkaliber was showing to me the other day?? If it IS the same bunker, I say drain that lake and look for a hatch there.

>_< Mochi, yes, Louis, that's exactly why I'm here.

It is that bunker. I took a few of them up there not too long ago to look at it and since then we have been trying to find the best way in -- meaning anyway in.

Hm, well if anyone should just happen to have a copy of "Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers" by Nick McCamley (272 pgs, HC, Pen & Sword Books, 2002), the following chapters might help:

CHAPTER 2: NORTH AMERICAN RADAR
Deals with the DEW Line, Mid-Canada Line, North Warning System, Pinetree Line, SAGE & BUICC (and their respective Group and Sector control bunkers), together with the various communication systems including NARS, WHITE ALICE, etc. The chapter ends with an account of the Texas Towers saga.

CHAPTER 5: COLD WAR BUNKERS IN CANADA
Explains the construction, operation and eventual demise of the Diefenbunker and the various Provincial government bunkers, and the convoluted story of Emergency Planning Canada.

Now, being as I personally don't have a copy, maybe someone would be kind enough to order one from amazon or sommit.

Nick McCamley is great, I've looked at a couple of his books and I tracked his email address down and we exchanged a couple of messages. He was really cool, and explained a bit about his experience with explorations and how he goes about it. I'd definately reccomend that you check out any of his books, even if the stuff it's about isn't near you, it still makes for pretty interesting reading.

i live about ten minutes away from the Diefenbunker here, which is now a cold war museum. I applied for a job there a few years ago but wasn't hired. Sigh.
