Other people in your site?

I came across a young couple today while exploring a riverside establishment. I had been to the place several times before, and something felt out of place this particular evening. I turned on my flashlight and got to checking the place out, and apparently I ruined a very romantic moment. I couldn't get myself to speak to them, and they couldn't bring themselves to say anything other than "Who dat is??" How often does this actually happen?

It happens, sometimes they're teens smoking weed, sometimes they're lovers experimenting with voyeurism or something, once in Ottawa I found a guy spraypainting the back of an abandoned truck depot.
*shrugs*
Generally I make a point of noticing them, a silent nod if I'm already walking past them, or a "Hey, I'm just exploring this dump a bit. Gonna check upstairs/take some pictures, then I'll probably be gone, k?".

I have the benefit of being a rather intimidating face when I want to be, not in a biker-way, but I can pull a mean "I'm doped up on crack and looking to kill somebody" face =) Call it my specialty ;)

Let's just hope that none of them ever find out I'm actually a vegetarian ex-sunday school teacher hippy...or whatever

Not to be a dick, but what makes it "your" site?

I have run into people when I've been exploring... many times other UE'rs. Sometimes they're friendly and interested in talking, sometimes they're extremely skiddish. I suppose this hobby attracts all kinds.

It makes it my site because I happen to have my mind set on going there ;). It's not that I think I own it or anything. I'm perfectly happy to share it, but it's just a little awkward to walk in on people having sex.

Yup, started by the only one who won't get it... OLAF

We actually found these 7 or 8 year old kids in a somewhat high security site.

If they look harmless I'll usually approach them and introduce myself, I've met a few explorers that way. On one occasion I met some people on the roof of a building, and we explored the place and later some other locations together. I've also encountered people on campus climbing onto roofs and looking for tunnels, most of them are just curious or looking for something to do.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I think I've told this story before...

While exploring Old Sweet Springs, WV, I noticed a late-middle-aged couple walking around the grounds. I exited the main building, and introduced myself to them. The wife explained that she had worked there when it was an old folks home, so I showed them the way in, and they gave me a guided tour of the place! It was really cool, they pointed out a lot of stuff that I had missed while exploring on my own. A few weeks later they mailed me a pile of historical information on the former resort.

As it turns out, they went there to steal old signs from inside the main building.

I ran into another explorer in the corridors of a mental hospital. We greeted each other, shook hands, and exchanged a bit of information about the site (I told him where to find the padded cells, he told me how to access the main hall), and with that we went our separate ways. I also had the less pleasant experience of sharing a visit to a large industrial site with a gang of yobs who were breaking things and throwing pieces of ducting and ventilators off the roof. I left rather quickly, not wanting to be associated with them if security turned up.

I've also HEARD other people in sites quite frequently, but it seemed they were as keen to avoid me as I was to avoid them, so I never actually met them.

We used to explore a huge abandoned, now gone, C&O railroad yard in northern Kentucky. On one occasion we ran into an old guy who had worked there in the 60's. He didn't mind us being there and gave us the run down on the place and was full of stories. Said he just came back for a look around.

Another time at the same place we found old helmets that had been long forgotten by the railroad. We were wearing them around when we came across a guy in a station wagon loading wire and old electrical components in the back. Before we could get very close to him, he saw us, chucked his 'haul' out the back and sped out of there.

Still another time at the same place we found a scrap company burning the wood off rail cars to get at the steel. They were less thrilled with us being there and asked us to leave. We did, but not before getting some pictures. I'll post some later. This was back in the mid 80s.

Just curious, are most of these stories when you guys were exploring at night? 'Cause I usually go during the day, and haven't run into anyone in or around the site I'm checking out [yet]. It seems that even popular teenage "hangouts" seem to attract more at night than during the day. Might just be me or where I live, though.

I've never bumped into anybody other than security while exploring at night, but then I mostly explore during the day, so it could just be chance.

I ran into a french demo team once. Luckily my friend spoke french. The bastard had called the cops on us... Apparently they were testing new experimental explosives and were afraid we were stealing them. He had blocked off the exit before calling the cops.

When the cops arrived they though we were parking it, called us liars when we said we were just looking around and taking pictures, refused to look at our photographic proof that we were just looking around, and let us go with only a warning.

I was exploring this afternoon, under a heavy rain (in the courtyard )and ran into a naked guy, changing from a gas mask to a "slave"outfit to be photographed by a friend....oops..expecting racoons but not this ! I excused myself for disturbing and he nicely offered to pose for me as I had my camera...
They were very nice and funny...What an encounter !!!!In broad daylight !!and.. yes,I took one picture.

I had a good encounter just yesterday. I went to check out an abandoned house it was boarded up and in one of the worst crime areas of Dallas. I saw some windows were not covered. As I got close I could hear some noise inside and stopped to listen. Just about that time a 10ft long piece of mahogany cornice moulding comes flying out of a window and I see two guys looking out another window at me. One turned and hauled ass I didnt even see where he went but the other one just stood there so I said Hi whatcha doin? He started mumbling something about he was supposed to be removing the wood for somebody etc. It was just a lame thieves excuse and guess he thought I was a cop. I assured him I was just going to take some pictures and he said oh no please dont take no pictures of me so I said no problem and went on with the shoot. Then he must have decided I was getting too close to his stash or something because he started following me around getting too close and trying to start up a conversation then I saw a bunch of disposable lighters and some bags in a coffee can and food right where he was trying to distract me. I just moved on shooting as I went. I thought he was going to get unstable on me there for a minute but he backed off. I still had to keep an eye on him while I was trying to get some pics, he wasnt real big or menacing but you never know what some of these people are carrying or what their state of mind is. He was pretty wacked out and smelled like a brewery but he went back to tearing down the hardwood mouldings and watching me like I was watching him. I guess if I had set up on the house a few minutes before barging in I would have seen the activity.

Right or wrong your just visiting in their element and they may feel territorial about some abandoned place they inhabit or frequent just like you do about your home.

One of the spots I tend to frequent is an old "retardation" center in Georgia. (Not quite a mental hospital, kind of an institution, yada yada yada). The last time I was there, which was pretty late at night, myself and crew were heading out the back door of the kitchen, just poking around. We look over towards the end of the complex and see three people walking hurriedly in our direction.

At first we thought it was security. This institution is located in what is now a city park, and security frequently deals with people jumping the fence to get back to this complex. Plus, they were all wearing white shirts, which this particular security agency wears. They were a ways off, so we jetted back into the kitchen and formulated our plan. This is when I came to my senses and realized there is only one guard at this place at all times, so these were just kids.

Still, being at the only entrance to this end of the building made us feel a little trapped, so we booked it through the kitchen, cafeteria, and a good stetch of hallway to find an alcove with a window. There we spent a minute to think again....These kids could be coming to tag it, get high, break stuff, whatever, and we really didn't want to be a part of that. We headed back out of the building at a high rate of speed and into the car. Then, the bottom of that thundercloud broke loose and we got dumped on. (The timing was impeccable).

On most other occasions, I explore with the A(pe) Team, out of Atlanta which consists of 2 guys in full SWAT gear, and 3 guys at 6 foot, 250+lbs. If we were there, we probably would have stuck around and tried to deter the kids from causing any more damage to the place.

Another night we went there, someone had written their name and that day's date in dust...so I wonder how long we missed them by.
