Yes, to get back on topic, I have an REI bag that I've been very happy with. Well made, good features and the best part is you can take it back if any little thing goes wrong EVER and exchange it.

You know some people don't use tactical gear to "look cool" believe it or not. I will stand by the practicality of a tactical vest till the spies come home. Most of the gear really is QUITE practical in fact. The military sweaters mentioned earlier are extremely comfortable and the patches on the arms are great for crawling through windows or tunnels. Hell I wear one on a regular basis because it's so comfy. It's not too hot, but it's great when in the cold too. Military boots, they're designed to be quieter, rugged and weatherproof. What's wrong with that? Personally the only military issue type thing I use is my M16 vest and even then only when I know I'm gonna be somewhere for a whiiiile, with little risk of getting caught, and I'm gonna need some of the stuff I keep in it. It's really much better than luggin around a big awkward backpack in a lot of situations.

Just a note while discussing rucksacks, courier bags, pouches and the like.

A good knapsack, esp one with a few pouches and coils of its own, is invaluable. I prefer having the bulk on my back, rather than hanging as a courier bag, or evenly spread around pouches, simply because;

a) As a few people have mentioned, sooner or later you're going to be caught/seen; you'd better hope that you don't look like a terrorist or cat burglar. A student with a bookbag is a lot less suspicious than a guy with a tac vest. (I usually toss a book or two in one of the many pouches, just in case I need to pull out The English Patient to strengthen my excuse)

2) You slip, you fall...it makes it a bit rockier of course, but having a large bulk on your back means that you won't roll all the way down the hill, your backpack will stop you after a single roll, since your body weight is wedging it into the mud/ground/whatever

I wear BDUs, jungle boots, and an ALICE pack for wilderness adventure all the time and I love it. Best, most durable gear I've ever used. I would never use that stuff in an urban environment, however. Just leaving the city wearing it gets me strange looks and attracts attention. I'm new to this urban exploration stuff so I'm currently looking for a better bag, but right now I'm using an old "Army of One" sling bag (only one strap, it's garbage. but hey, it was free!). It holds a surprising amount of stuff, but it's falling apart on me every day.

I don't get it; in the winter I wear a carhart overall, in the summer I wear jeans and a golf shirt; and whatever stupid hat I feel fits the moment. This summer maybe I'll break out the hawaiian shirts.
Don't forget a NITEYZ sleeve for you maglight; it keeps it handy with a strap so you don't have to actively hold on to it.

Remember, you are going to go explore to explore, take some photos, and make some memories. Not live out your commando/ninja fantasies.

ACTUALLY, DUDE, I prefer to bring my full length KATANA and a pair of nunchucks, because - let's face it - you never know when you're going to be ambushed by like seventeen Red Ninjas. Let's not forget my cloak and facemask...what if they were to see me in my normal gear and discover my identity? Oh yah, I never let anybody I'm with call me by my real name either. They have to refer to me by my very clever pseudonym, which I can't even TELL you guys.

As a rule, I strive to *not* look like something out of an army-navy store window.

If all that black kit works for you, great. If the cops here (USA) caught you trespassing in that get up, you would not only be mocked and laughed at, but you would be in for a big hassle - explaining yourself as you drive down to the station for questioning.

Comfy, temperature appropriate clothing, in neutral colors - ones that help you blend in with your surroundings - that do not scream "Look at me! I am delta/seal/splinter cell wannabe!" work best.

Well the thing is I AM in the army so i get access to all this cool gear, tell me would you not do that if you could get this stuff for free? btw, first of all you dont get caught by the cops (the cops in canada aren't too smart, well in london at least.)
secondly, I think you take exploring too seriously, so what if some one laughs at you, I'm sure most UE-ers don't care. (i know i dont). And if you do, you must really be unsecure. Thats all I have to say archangel.

Parkour people love these shoes.

http://www.urbanfr...1_product_test.htm

I haven't got a pair (yet), but they seem perfect for UE. Being new to this pursuit, and never having any spare cash, I usually just head out in comfy trainers, cut-off khakis, and random t-shirts, with a Mini-Mag in my pocket. I am lame enough to have a wishlist though;

Camelbak: Havoc 05
Knee pads: Adidas Team Lite G194
Shoes: Merrel Chameleon Slams
Respirator: 3M 7500
Headlight: Petzl Tactikka Plus
Radio: TTI 500TX PMR446
Multitool: Victorinox SwissTool RS

Seems like the perfect set-up, says this complete beginner.

I support the statement made about Magnum boots. The are very light, but also very sturdy. They don't feel anything like regular boots, but are just as tough.

For a bag, I'd also suggest the army rucksack, I've been using one for years and I never get weird looks and it never gets in the way if you pull the straps tight. This does not apply to belly crawl tunnels though. In those cases, it slides pretty well. I took the hint from a TV show about snipers and tie a short rope from it to my belt and pull it behind me in small crawls.

The cheap Rayovac two LED headlamps have served me very faithfully. I don't mind when I break them, or lose them either, because they cost twelve dollars (US).

Boots-wise I use Doc Marten's industrial boots I got free from work which do the job greatly - light, tough, if a bit ugly. Torches-wise I use a Maglite 2D which has the all-important 'droppability' factor, and a small LED light/keyring as backup. Clothes are just any scrappy ones I can find.

Just because we have somewhat fancy kit doesn't mean we should use it for whatever we like, simply because we can.
If your using issued kit for nonmilitary things like UE- it can get you in trouble should you get caught, and then you're in crap for both exploring and using military kit in a nonmilitary use. I wouldn't advise any issued gear because trying to explain why your combats/boots/jacket etc has a huge unrepairable rip in it and needs to be replaced through supply would be tedious at best. Read through the regs - you'll see.
Now there are gray areas about differing items as they can be found at surplus stores but its a gray area and one I certainly wouldn't like to explore
(also in the Cdn mil.)

*sighs* I suppose it would be something to explain my way out of an irrepairable rip in my kit. I suppose I could not cheap-out and purchase something like it at the local surplus, not at the same standard of quality albeit...

Just talking about the boots here, as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, the combat boots we have, I have to say suck, when the rubber soles get cold, (and yes it get fricking cold up here, especially in Alert) they tent to loose their grip, and well on ice you'll find yourself on your ass half of the time if you're not carefull.

The workboots however are made of different rubber and they work fine, as for the desert combats they have no ankle support so if you catch your step wrong you'll be with a twisted ankle.

But the are all extremly comfortable.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot about the new Gortex with Vibram soles. They are quite excelent as far as I've heard, but I've not had the chance to use them yet.

Just shoot for versatility. There is no "perfect" article of gear. Ultimately just go with what works for you.

Essentials: Flashlight, boots, digicam, somewhat rugged pants/shirt/gloves

That's all you need. I use a medium/small maglight, my little digital camera that I can fit into my front pocket, some hiking boots, and usually a pair of jeans and a hoodie. I tuck some leather work gloves into my back pocket in case I need them to overcome some obstacle.

That's all the pure exploration gear you'll need. A few tools might be called for depending on the situation, but for the most part just use things based on practicality, versatility, personal preference, and inconspicuousness.

I second the ascics, id just go with some ontisaku tigers. there like 20 bucks most places, and theyre pretty thin so you could have some nice control over them. The tip is pretty slender so fences wouldnt be too bad, and with some wear the sole gets pretty broken in. I dont know how hardcore of climbing your going to be doing, but if its nothing more than a fence and maybe some shimmying, those should be good. You just need to watch out for nails.
