Valve Chamber?

I've done some searching around (here, google, etc), and have not been able to find a definition of "Valve Chamber". This is with respect to a campus steam tunnel network. Would I be correct in guessing that these are like... "Control Stations" where you can turn steam off and on to the various tunnels? I found a list of locations on my campus, and will probably head out and try to see what these actually are, and if they're outside accessible.

I've jumped down manholes that fit your attempted definition.
Don't rule out manholes!

Tony, your description sounds accurate. I hope you do have a real utility tunnel network, otherwise you may be disappointed -- the existence of valve chambers may be indicative of a ducted system where the pipes themselves are not actually human-accessible without a backhoe, with periodic valve chambers that concentrate the control valves in one place.

What you call a valve chamber I have more commonly seen referred to as a vault. Basically it is a little concrete room beneath a manhole with some pipes coming in one wall and going out one or more other walls. The presence of vaults almost guarantees that there is not a tunnel nearby. On the other side of the walls the pipes pass through, the pipe is buried directly in the ground.

Hmmm... I ended up coming home to visit family instead of staying at school for spring break. I'll have to investigate more when I get back up. I do know that there are around 18km of tunnels beneath my school, but I'm not sure if these are in the tunnels, or if they're something else.
