Forgot to mention. There's no such thing as a "Sub Channel"...it pisses me off to no end when manufacturers refer to these things as having 14 channels and 38 sub channels. That's simply NOT true. There's 14 frequencies:
+-----------------+ | 1 - 462.5625MHz | | 2 - 462.5875""" | | 3 - 462.6125""" | | 4 - 462.6375""" | | 5 - 462.6625""" | | 6 - 462.6875""" | | 7 - 462.7125""" | | 8 - 467.5625""" | | 9 - 467.5875""" | | 10- 467.6125""" | | 11- 467.6375""" | | 12- 467.6625""" | | 13- 467.6875""" | | 14- 467.7125""" | +-----------------+
The 38 "Sub Channels" everyone refers to are things called CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System), PL (Private Line), CG (Channel Guard) or QT (Quiet Tone) - they're all the same thing. CTCSS is the Generic name, PL is Motorola's Name, CG is Ericsson's name and QT is Kenwood's name. Simply put, when you transmit on a channel without a PL tone, you're said to be using CSQ, or Carrier Squelch Mode. This means that any signal on that frequency, your radio will unmute and you'll hear it. This became a problem back in the day when many users began sharing frequencies, so Motorola came up with the Private Line system. Simply, what this does is transpose a certain tone onto your voice channel for as long as you're holding the PTT button for. The receiver at the other end is programmed to watch for this certain PL tone, and it will only unmute the receiver when it's detected the proper PL. There's also audio filters on the receiver to reduce or eliminate this tone so you don't hear it with your ear. The 38 standard PL tones are as follows: (and you're not getting a cute ASCII table this time!) (Note, the number in brackets is the tone's number on an FRS radio) These are all expressed in Hz, btw. XZ - 67.0 (1) XA - 71.9 (2) WA - 74.4 (3) XB - 77.0 (4) SP - 79.7 (5) YZ - 82.5 (6) YA - 85.4 (7) YB - 88.5 (8) ZZ - 91.5 (9) ZA - 94.8 (10) ZB - 97.4 (11) 1Z - 100.0 (12) 1A - 103.5 (13) 1B - 107.5 (14) 2Z - 110.9 (15) 2A - 114.8 (16) 2B - 118.8 (17) 3Z - 123.0 (18) 3A - 127.3 (19) 3B - 131.8 (20) 4Z - 136.5 (21) 4A - 141.3 (22) 4B - 146.2 (23) 5Z - 151.4 (24) 5A - 156.7 (25) 5B - 162.6 (26) 6Z - 167.9 (27) 6A - 173.8 (28) 6B - 179.9 (29) 7Z - 186.2 (30) 7A - 192.8 (31) M1 - 203.5 (32) M2 - 210.7 (33) M3 - 218.1 (34) M4 - 225.7 (35) M5 - 233.6 (36) M6 - 241.8 (37) M7 - 250.3 (38) So there you go. Subchannels Debunked. -Ex Now the REAL question of course...is it scary that I was able to type all of that out of my head? Yes, even the frequencies...

| | | It should also be noted that the 'privacy' codes do not really offer you any privacy at all. By enabling PL tones you prevent yourself from hearing any transmissions not encoded with the same tone but everyone can still hear you by simply disabling ctcss. That's another annoying marketing thing done. By calling them privacy codes people not familiar with how it works may get the impression they that are able to talk securely.

| | | Well Ex not being a radio enthusiast, toys work just fine for what I use em for. That's quite the impressive feat of memorization though.
