Does anyone know about or do they routinely utilize insurance riders when asking permission to film an abandoned place. If so where do you get them and how much do they cost for a day of filming.

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

That greatly depends on the location. Many places have such riders which you have to sign before entering the property. Usually just the typical "if I fall and break my ass it's not your fault" type of stuff.

Why would you need them exactly? What do you have to insure other than yourself and your equipment? Many locations are "at your own risk" unless you're talking dozens of people and thousands and thousands of dollars in equipment which are under your care. Even then they'd have them more than likely.

Well I am not sure; having worked with redevelopment firms I have been extended courtesy and merely signed a release but the last time I was asked if I had an insurance rider as well.

This is what I am deducing. I am a little older and I don't want the hassel of the police or taking a bad photo because I am worried about getting caught etc. I'll sneak if I have to but don't prefer it. Ueing to me is by far the best thing that I have ever done in my life. I am trying to make myself more attractive so that when I ask for permission it is not such a big fucking hassel.

For instance my friend's dad was in city government in Tallahassee so he asked around for us to get into Sunland. Now, sunland is tore all to hell as you well know. Despite this fact when we contacted the division of Children and Families
in Tallahassee there was no way he would let us in even with a signed release because ultimately the state would be liable and apparently the state got sued when someone went into sunland in orlando and fell down an elevator shaft.

My guess is the insurance has to do with liability. I am not sure. It probably isn't medical I have that insurance. A release is only so good.

I figure when I ask if I present as a photographer with an artistic intention and have insurance I will get a lot less rejection.

What this also does is lets you go in alone without having the staff of some place follow you around.

I found this website for Chad Kleitch (sp) who took pictures of Norwich with permission. I e-mailed him and he gave me the name of the hospital adminstrator. I then e-mailed him but did not have a spiel other than ohhhhhh I love abandoned hospitals. So, he never e-mailed back. But ,if you can tell an administrator that they have nothing to loose then why wouldn't they let you in.

Because no one else cares. Sad truth. If they seriously have nothing to lose - no financial risk, legal risk, threat of exposing something meant to be kept secret (however farfetched that may be), or whatever else you can think of - it's just because they don't care. That they don't support your cause as an artist (as I got the impression was what you were passing yourself of as) so it's not worth the paperwork for them. Not worth unlocking the gates.

Either way, good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I hear you and I have to agree. They definitely don't care unless they see you on a site then it's here we go.

I have had some luck archiving places before redevelopment especially something that a community is attached to. Like in Pittsburgh they were practically begging for pictures before a site got demolished.

I guess that is the point somewhat these are places that no one cares about. If it wasn't for the beauty inherent in them I wouldn't want to explore them.

You can purchase an insurance rider for anyone, anywhere or anything. It's simply a time, place or person specific policy. Most companies that handle business insurance can provide one for you.

There's also the possibility of purchasing a general business liability plan. All you need is an occupational license as a photographer.

It's fairly inexpensive. I have $3 million liability coverage for my business, which is an actual location, and that costs me around $600/year. I'm sure a home based business with little risk, such as a photographer, would be much less.

To add a specific company to my policy as an additional insured, for example a venue where I may be exhibiting, runs me about $100 for #1 million in coverage.

This is an interesting angle because I can't see why a company who owns an abandoned space would mind letting a professional, insured photographer in take pictures. I think you just have to pitch it right.

If you make any progress with getting permission, let me tag along and we can use my insurance since it's already in place.
