Apartments/Condos

Me and my friends were looking at a few apartments/condos not so much from a UE point of view, but from a recreation point of view. Its winter now, and having exhausted our towns supply of fun UE places during the summer, we're looking for good places to go in the cold. I know of a couple apartments/condos boasting pools, pool tables, lounges etc. that would be reasonably entertaining as well as mixed with a bit of sneaking and exploration to get there. On our first and only attempt so far we were stopped at all entrances by locks, so we proceeded to find an underground walkway to the parking garage on the other side of the property. We again were stopped by the insistance of a key. Any ways of getting in besides waiting suspiciously and tailing a person? Or if thats the only way any good ideas on how to do it?

It'd be safer to tail someone than to try and pick any locks. If you made it in and got caught with the picks you'd be in a world of hurt, much worse than just being caught in a place your not supposed to be.

I don't know how many places we've gotten into by just running for the door when someone else goes in. Usually they'll hold it for you. Of course you have to look like a resident of the building or like a residents' friend. Dead simple social engineering.

The tailing is a good idea, though I am not sure of the oppurtunity for social engineering. If I was the friend of a resident they would buzz me up, and if I were a resident I would have a key. What line would be best then?

Find out what you need to do to buzz someone in. If you have to press 7 to buzz someone in, call a random person and ask them to press 7, because there were some problems with the lines in the condo being crossed, and you need a signal verification. You would be astonished at how often this works.

Another method is to just use a tone dialer (or a cell phone with the keypad volume on loud). If the condo's system allows in-band signaling, all you have to do is go to the condo, call someone, wait for them to pick up, and blast a 7 tone into the mouthpiece (this is assuming that 7 is the tone needed). Unforteunatly, this doesn't work too often. I've only had this actually work in one place.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

"Pizza Hut."

Honestly though the definition of social engineering as I understand it is much more than just bullshitting, its about posture and presence, act like you belong and nobody will question you.

Buzz enough apartments and someone will usually buzz you in. In the larger places anyway.

Yet another unoriginal generic UE website. GODDAM!

I've had decent luck "hacking" the buzzer box. Most of the newer digital systems have some kind of maintenance access from the keypad. Usually pressing * and 0, or # and 0 will prompt you for a password. A suprising number of boxes use the buildings street address number for the password. You may need to do some research on exactly how to access the door lock stuff once your in the maintenance menu. Google usually works well for that. Alot of the companies put the product manuals on the web.

Have you tried hotels yet? It's so much easier to blend in while exploiting hotels. You can usually score free food, too. Nobody bothers you because they don't want to alienate a customer. YOu can get away with not having a key, and most doors are open anyways. Theres pools, hot tubs, gym rooms, even open bars if your lucky.

good luck

I think I would draw the line with a hotel; after all, all the people there are "transient" anyway, but as soon as you said "getting into" apartments/condos, it struck a nerve with me; people live here!

My advice; go right ahead and try, but you are invading people's privacy (and a person with not so good intentions could do the same thing.

If I lived there and I found out you "snuck" into my building I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to beat your ass down and then tell the cops you tripped.

You've crossed the line between "talking your way into a swimming pool" and what amounts to home invasion.

You never know, perhaps I live in this complex you are looking at? Let's hope not!

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

I've used the tailing thing on several occasions. What I have found works best is to do something outside, near the door. Pretending to talk on a cell phone, tying your shoes, or rumaging through your bag tend to work pretty well. You just gotta wrap your conversation up (for the cellphone thing) just as the person approaches the door and make your way towards it. Just be like "ok, cool, I'll talk to you in a few, I'm gonna get in the elevator now." Probably a good idea to switch the phone off or put it on vibrate, as it would not be good if it actually rang while you were pretending to be on it.

I used to use this technique to get into my gf's dorm building all the time so that she wouldn't have to come down and sign me in. People will tend to not bother you if you are on a cellphone, and wouldn't think twice of it if you seemed a little disoriented/distracted because of the phone.

"Because there's no possibility of real disaster, real risk, we're left with no chance for real salvation. Real elation. Real excitement. Joy. Discovery. Invention. Unless everything can get worse, it won't get any better." -Chuck Palahniuk

'Dukes, don't worry man! I'm not going into peoples apartments at night and wrecking up the place! It's just another place to explore. I hope dearly I don't invade any privacy (but I don't think I will unless someone is doing private things in the hallway). Just because I want to explore there doesn't mean all sorts of sinister types are going to start doing it, they would do it regardless of me anyway. And yes I hope I'm not looking at your complex because you seem to be a rather violent person and being a vigilante and beating people senseless doesn't sound that righteous to me anyway....

I'm harmless; I'm just telling you this for your own good; this is private property, not owned by some nameless state or province, but where people actually Live! Start talking lockpicks and you are sure to run into trouble with the law. Is it worth it? In college, I practiced this extensively; doing the "hold the door for me" thing, e.t.c., to get into my GF's apartment, but that was college.
This is where folks live, and pay good money to do so.
Besides; how do we know this person isn't a representative of some police force who is convinced that UE'r's are into breaking into residences? By talking about this here you are convincing the law that we are "like that". I can't see any good coming from talking about this on a public forum which is searchable. You wan't to sneak into a dorm room, fine. I have serious doubt about the legitimacy of this. Most people here would never intrude into a residence of any type, even ones that appear abandoned.
Who are you exactly?

Just wait at the door for some one to enter/exit then grab the door before it closes... I guess it could depend on the time of day, but usually you dont have to wait too long before someone is coming or going. My ex used to misplace her key all the time and actually relied on that method for an entire week once just to get home. Some people are uptight about the door, but most will hold it open for you if you give them a look of desperation and tell them you forgot your key.

However, I have to agree completly with 'Dukes... sneaking into apartments is kinda stupid. WTF are you gonna do in there!? sit on the couch in the lounge? just go to starbucks at least they serve coffee too.

I'd be right pissed if you broke into my Condo (when i lived in one.) It's called *private* for a reason. You've walked far across the line of UE, you're no longer exploring, you've entered. >.< I'm guilty on this count by exploring the courtyards of Yale using the above mentioned tactics such as cell phone or pretending to lose pass card. I've even scored a nice buffet at a hotel in this manner, by pretending that I "belonged"...but at the last condo I lived some ass decided to just walk up our stairs for 'jollies'. We were expecting friends over so the front was open and this total stranger came walking up with the lame excuse, "I thought this was communal." Believe me, if I had a weapon on my I would not have hesitated to turn it on him.

Abandoned hospitals and such are one thing but places with people living in them and *paying* to live in them and *paying* for security are not places to play.

I want to get into a building which may or may not even be condos (pretty sure they are, I haven't gotten a chance to really scout it out yet). Only reason I want to get in there is it looks like a nice roof =D. As long as you're not trying to get into the actual apartments or pissing in their pools there shouldn't be that much of a problem. Just hanging around for a few hours in their rec room though is a bit weird...

While I think there's merit in exploring residential properties (really what's the difference in exploring an office tower that's owned by BuildingCo or an apartment owned by BuildingCo?) 'Dukes raises a good question. What business do we have giving advice on entering properties in an open online forum? Is this a B&E training ground?

Alright, now that I'm public enemy #1 due to some pretty wild conclusions of what I might be doing. I'm not breaking into apartments, not peering into peoples bedrooms, not hanging around like a freak in recrooms for hours on end, not opening the doors for theives, they just look interesting to explore..... thats all. I guess if you didn't come to wild conclusions of what I might do once in you wouldn't have much of an arguement anyway. Regardless, I promise to you all I didn't put half as much thought into this than you have, I just saw some cool buildings I wanted to explore. So... to restate my earlier point.... "Alright Whatever".
