OK, I was going to hold off on this one until I got back to the spot to take some pics, but since the road leading there isn't there anymore, you'll have to take my word for it.

As you guys know, I live in the Champlain Valley wedged in between the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Champlain and Vermont. This is one of the longest-settled places in North America. Anyways, one night Shawn, Tyrone (he's white), and myself were out 4-wheeling in Tyrones' Blazer-From-Hell. We headed up Big Hollow to check out the view, the haunted house and the cemetary. Feeling all badass at being badasses, Tyrone decided to test the Blazer-From-Hell on the back way out of the Hollow. So as he pass the Notch (basically we had the Blazer-From-Hell on its side, Shawn and i holding on for dear life), Tyrone stops to take a leak. Shawn, who is a consumate wiseass pulls out the 900 million candlepower light and starts throwing the beam around the woods. That is when we see the building.

Off about 50-75 yards from the trail is this cabin-looking thing. It's almost hidden by the trees. So we saunter out to investigate. This was way before the Blair Witch and somewhat after the Evil Dead, so we aren't really too creeped, but we are walking awful close together. So we start checking the thing out, walking around it. It's about 25-35ft to a side, about 15ft tall, log, stone foundation and... NO DOOR. There is no door into this place. At all!

So Shawn pulls the light away and I notice it first. There is light coming from inside of it. Not like electric light, by candle or lantern light. At this point, we're all a little nervous, trying to be badasses, we play it off. So we start heading back to the Blazer-From-Hell when I start hearing things in the brush moving around, leaves rustling, things that you really don't want to hear in the woods at 1am when you don't have either an Uzi, shotgun, or ecto-blaster! Ever see three grown men do a macho, i'm-not-afraid-but-scared-shit-less-powerwalk back to a truck? I had a pucker factor of 9.99868.

No idea what it was/is. No idea if its still there. Don't want to find out what was going on. No one seems to know anything that's up there. Where I live is like that... weird shit goes on all the time, but no one pays any attention to it. Myself and other people have seen things that belong on a special episode of "Sightings" but no one says anything about it until they get drunk and start throwing stories around. I talked to a bunch of people that hunt that mountain and not one can recall anything like what i described.
freaky.

Now, i just succeeded in freaking myself out now that the house and neighborhood is dark. Who says Halloween only comes once a year?

Is that the road that your "big hollow" location was on; I think it was a house up there?
Another day for me wasted looking around for an intersection on a map and still couldn't find it. I should change my name to the "aimless wanderer"

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

the scariest experience for me while UEin was when i was leavin this tb hospital and i turned a corner and was face to face.... well chest to face with the biggest god damn black dog ive ever seen in my life. keti and matt were about 40 seconds behind me and i had no idea what to do. so i just stood there. facin down this massive dog. it was the longest 20 or so seconds of my life. now when i was a kids my dad always said the last thing you want to do to any dog, wild or domestic, is run away from it. so i slowly turn away and (prayin to jesus in everyway i can think) walk away as slow as i can. to top it all off i had to take a leak like nobodys business and had a horrible UTI. needless to say i was in agonizing pain ontop of god awful fear.

besides that i think havin my light die in the center of a hobo infested basment with no idea of the way out was pretty bad.

I think I know where that building is. I used to ride my dirt bike around there when I was younger. I think if I had a four wheel drive vehicle I could find the place again.

I think if I rember right there is a old as bridge a ways down the rock crawl from it. I am not one hundred percent sure. I never thought anything of it when I was younger I was just out cruising the dirt bike or sled.

It looked creepy there during the day. Don't really have any experiances with the hollow that far down. Mine all come from the top of it.

Some one rolled a truck off the top of it.

thats the 'haunted house' on Lang Road (Big Hollow Road)... the building I was talking about is- as you come up to the cemetary, instead of hanging a right for the 4x4 trail to the top, you go straight up the wash and hang a right (it was a skidder trail for awhile). There *was* a road (more like a goat path now) that went all the way out to Cold Spring road on the Crown Point side of the line. That's where this creepy building is. Tyrone remembers it; I was speaking with him tonite about it. By the way, Sky, the fogs on your Buick are very BRIGHT! (lol- caught you by Leroys at about 12:30-45 Friday night)

My scariest experience almost totally put me of ever going outside again!
Ok, se me & my friend went to this really freaky forest, you know them ones with really tall branchless trees in them, it was pich black but you could still see the shadows of the trees so we where walking towards this strange house that we where going to explore.
When we got to the house it was so scary! The door was like a cross (as in a christian cross) it was so strange! all the windows where share in these really freaky skull frames with scratches all over the windows.
We just took a look at it and turned back, we where FU***** SHI**I*G ourselves! As you can imagine, then the thing that totally freaked us happened, and i dont know if it was our imagination or whatever but one of the massive tall trees, just FLEW across the forest floor, not falling over tho, it like slid across the floor with this totally creepy noise, i SWEAR, i almost crap myself just remebering it, ive never been back to that place and i dont plan to in this lifetime.
The only time i went in that forest again was a couple weeks later, but only dared to go this far and i got this pic:

Old thread I know, but I had to reply. Fear is not an illusion. It's a real emotion that we as human beings feel. Knowledge and weapons and flashlights help, but they can't drive it completely away.

It was over thirty three years ago in Lorton Virginia. I was fifteen years old and on a dare was exploring an ancient mausoleum by flashlight. This was a custom designed private estate mausoleum in the woods behind Pohick Church., George Washington and George Mason supervised the construction of the church building in 1774, completing it just before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.

I grew up in a town just a few miles away. We used to hear stories of this creepy haunted burial grounds guarded by demons. None but the bravest “coolest” kids in school had ever been inside the walls let alone enter the catacombs.

We drove there listening to Black Sabbath which in retrospect may have been a bad idea. We parked the car half a mile down the road and crept through a thick forest to reach the massive brick walls of the forgotten haunted catacombs.

The entrances to the underground tombs were in a sculpture garden courtyard formed by vaults and a twelve foot brick walls with oversized iron gates at one end. Of course the gates were locked by heavy chains. To enter one climbed trees that had grown up beside the wall. Once on top of the wall, we merely lowered ourselves over the side by a short piece of rope we found tied to the tree and draped over the wall. The rope didn’t reach nearly half way down the wall so we just hung and dropped when we reached the bottom.

We mad our way through numerous smaller courtyards and by statues and carvings, searching for entrances to the underground crypts rumored to be much larger then the five acres above ground. I remember feeling the stare of stone eyes from the grotesque statues and wanting very badly to leave. But we hadn’t thought out our plan very well for the short rope wouldn’t be much help getting us out and there were no trees on the inside that would help us climb out. We were going to have to boost one another up, with the last of us not having a boost, having to really rely on someone up top somehow pulling them up from above. None of us wanted to be the first to ask to leave.

We pressed on looking for the legendary entrance to the underground world rumored to have more fantastic statues and carvings than on the surface. From the distant side of the courtyard we heard a pinging noise like a ball peen hammer on a train rail. We turned off our flashlights hushed each other to get a better listen. Suddenly we heard footsteps rushing toward us. We took cover behind the sculptures when appearing out of the darkness were the familiar figures of three of our classmates, apparently also exploring but now for whatever reason “fleeing” and unaware of our presence.

Without even knowing what they were running from, I decided to join them in their exit except as I emerged from my hiding space they practically fainted at the site of me. They calmed themselves and caught their breath, claiming to have gotten a metal vault door partially open and seeing “something”: … the hideous face of someone or something just inside the door...

“No way!“ we said but they didn’t take time to debate and just resumed their getaway. Our group stood frozen for a moment as we thought about going to see the face for our selves or running for our lives. We paused for a few moments and since no demons were pursuing our friends we decided it was safe to go investigate what they might have seen.

Along one brick wall we found a metal door partially bent back and pried open. We approached cautiously but soon we were all tugging on the door. One of my friends put a big foot on the wall and leaned back pulling the door back telling me to slip in. while he held it. Anxious to show courage I proceed to do so thinking this was going to make me a legend in my school. I put my flashlight in first and looked around the dusty cobwebbed room. I decided that the first three explorers were pussys… because there was no way anyone had opened this door in years, there was an inch of dust.

We pried back the door just enough for me to get the top of my torso and one arm in. I shown the light around and spotted a wall of open vaults to my right but something moved in front of me causing me to jerk the light in that direction. There in the darkness was a partially illuminated hideous snarling face looking right at me. I screamed in horror and started to back out but my friends dropped the door and bolted backward momentarily trapping me in the door, face to face with the demon creature of the underworld or whatever was inside. Still yelling I looked up at the creature again…. And realized it was not moving from it spot …merely writhing in place… I looked closer and finally realized I was looking at my own reflection in a polished granite wall … holding the light below my own face screaming at my own reflection.

I still don’t know how I got out of the door. My buddies had ran. I was the last one out but managed to scale that wall. I got my fingers on the ledge and one of my buddies pulled me over. We ran like rabbits threw the woods, jumped in the car and squealed wheels. Later and for years there was lots of laughter… but no further explanation… just too creepy!

About fifteen years later I briefly reexplored in daylight hours. It had been partially demolished, but some of the statues and carvings were still there. I don’t know if anything is left now.(12/04) Researching years later I discovered this was the Remey Family Mausoleum (Remeum) built in In 1937 CHARLES MASON REMEY (1874-1974) County records say it was completely demolished because of a problem with vandals. It was located @1/2 mile southwest of Pohick Episcopal Church, 9301 Richmond Hwy., Lorton, Va.. The church is still there and is very much an active church.

The real story:

“Mr. Remey contracted with Pohick Episcopal Church for 5.2 acres of land to build a mausoleum for his family. Remey reportedly chose Pohick Church because GEORGE MASON IV, his great grandfather, was a vestryman. Remey was an architect of international reputation and a man of some wealth. Construction of the "Remeum" began in 1939 and was finished in 1948, with more than 2 million bricks, and In 1962 the church vestry, motivated by concerns over the size of the ediface and serious problems with vandalism, began to negotiate with Remey to break the 1937 contract. An agreement signed in Federal District Court in 1968 gave Remey until April 1973 to remove anything he wanted from the mausoleum, thereafter ownership reverted to the church. Relatives had @15 burials removed to Pompey, N. Y., and by 1973, the year the building was demolished, only Remey's wife GERTRUDE was still there. Her remains were reinterred at Pohick Church before demolition began.”

While exploring a 14 story hotel that had been abandoned in the 60's, my buddy and I stumbled onto things that still make me shudder. On the eighth floor, 3 or 4 rooms had kids toys neatly rearranged in corners and windowsills. There was a moldy mattress in one room. Someone had tacked Anne Geddys calendar pictures to the wall. And when I say kids stuff, I mean like things for 3 or 4 year olds. While we were in shock, being parents ourselves, we heard footsteps going down? the fire stairwell. We finished our tour, but were completely creeped out. Nothing like a huge mag-lite for false courage!

Personally, I think of fear as your survival instinct kicking in. It's the animal part of your brain's way of telling you it doesn't want to die yet

The "scariest" experience I had was waaay back when I was young and exploring sewers with several friends. We had entered a new tunnel we hadn't been down before, and were in it for quite a while. Now, it was overcast when we went in, but it must've started to rain while we were inside.

You can probably guess what's coming.

If you haven't been in a sewer when its raining, let me tell you they fill up very, very fast. From ankle deep to waist deep in 30 seconds flat. Luckily we were in a room that had a ladder leading up to a manhole cover. As the tunnels filled up, the room started to fill, and we climbed progressively higher up the ladder. Being kids, the cover was too heavy to lift, so we stayed as close as we could to the top of the ladder. As we were holding on for dear life, I remember hoping desperately that the water wouldn't get any higher. What made it worse was that a few weeks previously I remembered hearing on the news about a bunch of kids who drowned in the same circumstances. I couldn't believe I was going to become a statistic.

Luckily, the water didn't rise any higher than the ankles of the lowest person on the ladder (there were 3 of us). It seems like it took forever for the water level to go back down, and when it was low enough we ran like hell out of there.

I learned my lesson though - no sewer exploring unless the weather is clear.

Last year I was up at an old radar base with a couple friends. This was our first time up there so we didn't know the layout or what to expect at all. When we got to the top we found a huge paved area that had deteriorated quite a bit. It was covered with tons of debris and had grass growing out from some of the cracks.

As I was shining my light around looking at the buildings, I noticed a rather large object on the ground. So I pointed my light at it, and to my horror, found a body. As we approached it, we discovered that it wasn't a body, but a scarecrow that someone had discarded. It still scared the shit out of me though... Having to walk back down to the car knowing we had found a dead guy. I'm glad it wasn't. heh

Also, another time at the same place, we were exploring the perimeter of the buildings. There was an old transport box along the edge of one of them. It was very old and falling apart. This complex was no longer used, and hadn't been used for 20 years. So we approach the box and find that the doors had been locked. So we decide to pry them open to see what's inside. It must have been good for being outside an abandoned military base, right? So we pry and pry and finally the hinge gives way. The door hadn't opened yet. At this time I was on the other side of the building testing out my new flashlight. So they give me a call to let me know it's open and to come over to look.

As I approach the building, we all stop for a second because we hear a faint beeping noise. So as one of my friends open the door, we're met face to face with a huge security plaque. We immediately slammed the door and wondered what to do... Should we explore the rest of the buildings or just take off running? Well, it didn't take long for us to decide once we heard the blaring whine of the security alarm kick in. We turned and ran all the way down the hill as fast as possible. That was the longest run I've ever done... Even if it was all down hill.

But probably the scarriest thing I've seen was a couple days ago when a couple friends and I went up to Camp Bison. Camp Bison was an old minimum security prison with many jail cells. Most of the cells had wooden doors. We were on the top floor at about 9:00PM just after the sun had gone down checking out all the empty cells. All the doors on this floor were pretty much wide open. The wind had picked up and had started blowing a few loose chains around making rattling and clanking noises. I never really got use to the clanking noises since they seemed to be coming from everywhere. The whole time I swear I was hearing things "falling" from the rooms to the ground below. So we head out into the hall to move to the basement when a huge gust of wind picks up. One by one all the way down the hall coming towards us all the doors start blowing shut. I just stood there frozen until the wind died down.

And that's it.

Back in '95, some friends and I went up to explore an adit in the Huachuca mountains. It was a nice hike up the canyon to the old mine site around 4-5,000 feet up the mountain. When you reached the site, the old road was on the left side of the canyon. The site was situated so that the adit was on the left and towards the back of site was some old steam equipment. The road led around behind the trees to the right side of the canyon, with another trail branching off snaking up the mountain to an additional adit directly above the site.

Now I had been there on several occasions. However, every time I hiked there, I always felt like we were being watched. This feeling remained during the entire hike, from the parking area to the site itself. On this particular occasion, we explored the tunnel and had just crawled out for a lunch of granola bars and water before hiking up to the other adit. We were relaxing, discussing the upcoming school year when we were interrupted by some rustling in the bushes on the right side of the canyon. We stopped talking for a moment and watched in that direction, hoping to see a deer or Ranger Smith coming up to tell us to get the hell out of there. Nothing emerged, but it looked like something was behind the bushes. We heard further rustling and what sounded like rocks being kicked.

By this time, all of us are now glued to that side of the canyon with the paranoia creeping up. We knew it wasn't a park ranger as they would have surely shown themselves by now. What we didn't know, was whether it was another hiker, a deer, an illegal, or worse: a mountain lion or bear. Realising that we still had a two-hour hike to the parking area, we decided to pack up and get the hell out of there... at quickly as we could safely move down the rocky terrain.

There was one cool thing about this trip - I stopped for a few minutes half way down the trail to catch my breath while my friends hike down the trail. I glanced up the trail to see if anything was following us when a cracking twig caught my attention. I turned to see three deer standing in a clearing. One of them was about 10' feet away, watching me. To be standing that close to something in nature is beyond amazing.

Scariest thing for me was in Dorback Lodge, an abandoned hunting lodge; there was enough bundering and knocking upstairs to shake the walls and dislodge some of the plaster. There was no wind whatsoever, no way any animal large enough to make such a huge thud could have got up there, and no signs of human life. Freaky. Still, it didn't put me off going back...

Also in an abandoned farmhouse I found a secret room with a door which had clearly been seriously nailed shut at some time - slightly unsettling, if not really scary. I wonder what it was keeping inside?

I know it goes against the ethics of UE'ing, but you have to have been tempted to pry that secret panel. I know it'd be very tempting me not to find a way to peek inside.
