Here's a trick from my days in the .mil:

Buy a flash-cube (some drug stores still carry them) and hang it around your neck by a piece of string. If it goes off, your family jewels are in danger of cooking - so go back the way you came! Right Now.

RF energy is electro-magnetic. A magnetic field that passes through a conductor (magnesium fluff inside flash-cube) will induce a voltage in that conductor. RF that is fairly strong will set a flash bulb off before it actually cooks your gutty-works.

Disclaimer: it is still possible to fry your guts without setting off the flash, but it's very unlikely.

If you climb a UHF antenna mast that is transmitting, you can expect the flash bulb to go off about 10-20 meters from the antenna. That means it's time to leave. Radar (1Ghz and up) will set off the flash at much longer distances (up to 3 miles away!)

Small fourescent tubes work as well, like the camping light kind. you can also get frequency counters with signal strengh meters built into them. stay away from microwave towers, they are the same you cook with, and the wattages are often higher.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Ummm.... I'd say they are much much higher. A typical microwave is 800 watts, whereas I'd imagine a microwave trasmitter might run 10-100 kilowatts. Fortunately, microwave transmitters are typically directional, so unless you stand in front of the horn or dish, you're probably OK. There could be some spillover but I doubt it would be any worse than standing near, say, a radio transmitter. Not that that's something you'd want to do for any extended period either.

As an interesting factoid, wireless internet equipment (802.11a/b/g) uses microwave frequencies as well.

As far as the Mound plant goes, I would stay away too. Almost all these sites are government owned and contractor operated. Trespassing charges are fellonies here. And as long as there are any nuclear materials on site, it will be guarded by guys with guns. While they may not be able to protect to the highest degree from a terrorist attack, I'd be willing to bet my bike that they could stop any of us without any problems.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.
