Being cruel to dogs (was: Freaky thing happened Saturday night)

Sorry if this is a long read, but I didnt leave anything out.

Saturday night we went to Con Agra Mill with our mission being to check out the flooded basement/possible tunnels. We donned our waders and proceeded to go down into the unknown, we traveled through a utility tunnel that was flooded up to almost the waist, it was very comical seeing Gatsby in his hip waders, pulling them up with his hands as the water was only about half inch to an inch below the tops of them

Anyway, we ended up in a boiler room, this thing was pretty awesome, it had 2 ancient rusted boilers, and other old crap laying around, I was wearing chest waders, so I could only explore this area, as the water was too deep for Gatsby’s pitiful hip waders. I have to tell you, it was kind of freaky, there was all sorts of things under the rust colored water sitting on the floor, or half submerged, all rusty and grimy, all unseen to human eyes for who knows how long.

I explored a bit and then Gatsby and I wanted to go to a different section and explore more flooded parts. We went into the new building, and down the stairs into the flooded area, as soon as we get down, we thought we heard some kind of noise, like a bottle breaking, metal against metal screeching, or a dog barking. We sat there motionless with our lights off for a little while just listening, we heard it a couple more times, and pretty soon it was easily distinguishable, it was a dog/dogs barking, it kept on getting closer and closer, soon it was in the room where we had just been, possibly at the top of the stairs, and it was GOING FUCKING CRAZY! It was barking non-stop, we had no clue why this dog was here, if it was a guard dog, someone was illegally dog fighting, or if it was the police. Either way, we did not want to find out.

At this point we were a little scared and moved into the more flooded section of the basement. You see the basement went under these 2 buildings, and soon we were back to the point where we had just been, unfortunately Gatsby had to flood his waders, but by this time, thats the last thing we cared about. The water gurgled into his once dry waders, lightening the mood a tad bit.

So we sat once again, without light, without sound, just listening. We decided it was time to try and go out of the first building we were in, as it seemed the dog was still in the room above us. We went up the stairs from the basement, myself in the lead, I looked out the door, it seemed clear. Then as I got about 4-5 feet away from the door, we both heard a jingling, it was coming from outside. I could not believe what was happening. Its very hard to explain the feelings at that time, It was like one of those out of body experiences, where you see yourself in a situation, you know whats going to happen, your seeing everything unravel right in front of your eyes, and its all within a matter of milliseconds.

To our dismay, as soon as we heard the sound, 2 large dogs passed by the door, one black, and the other light brown. I thought, that’s it, were toast, we are going to have to try and fend off 2 large rapid dogs. To our surprise they went right by. I do not know why, but Im glad they did. We went back downstairs for a while; both frightened at what had just happened, and how close we had been. We gained the courage to make another attempt out the door again, and we did, we succeeded. We finally made it outside; we were going to be okay.

We exited the building, and with haste and rounded the corner to the left of us. As soon as we turned the corner in the distance, what do we see about 50 feet ahead? You guessed it, the FUCKING DOG COMING AROUND THE CORNER AS WELL!!!! I can tell what it is this time, it’s a great big rottweiler, AND IT HAS ITS MOUTH OPEN!!! I turned around and started running, which only lasted for a little while, since Gatsby said if it noticed us running or heard us, it would probably run after us no matter what. We started to walk away keeping close to the weeds/trees by the creek hoping that the rotty was not in pursuit(we still had to walk the entire length of the building at this point), for some reason I kept on wanting to go into the creek, since I thought if we were going to be attacked by dogs we would have better chances of surviving the skirmish if the dogs would have to swim. But the ugly confrontation with the dogs never came. We made safely to some tennis courts and ungeared ourselves. We were on an adrenaline high, lucky to escape unharmed, and unscathed. The cool midnight air has never felt so good. I felt so alive. Fuck I love exploring.

Ahh the wonderful feeling of dogs. You were right to head for the water. Dogs are far less effective in water.

I was not cracking on you about that, the first part was a jest. Anyways if your carrying anything, stick backpack etc, put that between you and the animal. Most animals bite, strike the nearest object to them.

seriously though, you can get "halt", a dog specific repelent in most bike shops.

THE ABOVE WAS NOT EDDITED FOR SPELLING OF GRAMICAL ERRORS

I have an awesome collection of human bones, including a skull, they're all in pretty good condition, too. Nobody's ever said anything to me about not being allowed to keep them. They'd have a hard time getting them from me too, since they're inside my body.

One of the Corrosion Agents, Carson Blocks, has had to punch a dog (or two) to avoid having his face eaten. That seems sort of cruel on one hand, but on the other... he still has a face.

Heh... might be kinda difficult to explain why you were carrying around an eightball of coke and an IV unit of blood -

"Well, you see officer, the thing is..."

Not that i explore without blood and cocaine, mind you.

Ammonia will do much the same. You know how you don't like that stuff - imagine if your sense of smell was about 30 times greater. That's how it feels to the dog.

Dogs are also far less effective with a face full of pepper foam.

lol ok the dog trainer is comin in ...

Carry pepper spray like others have said or a dog deterant device (high pitched annoying noise)

You never want to run from a dog, walking away was smart and staying near the water. Running from a dog is a game to them... Prey kill... chase the bunny! lol Slow movement, no movement bores a dog and they should go away. That also works well if you're getting bit (I know hard to do) or if you use a stick for the dog to get bit instead of your arm. If you stop movement as much as possible, out of boredom, they will let go and walk away.
If your confronted, stare him down and do not look away until he does. Its a submissive thing. If they look away, other than from other distractions, that means they gave up and submitted to you. But wait for the dog to walk away, don't turn your back on him.

The blood and cocaine... you'll have to explain that one to me. Drops of blood is not going to stop a dog from attacking you if they see you already. Maybe if you want to bring a raw steak with you to throw to em for your get away, but that will make them follow you until you decide to throw it at em. Keep in mind, a visious dog may not fall for that, specially when they have something to chase and some dogs, guard dogs are trained not to take any food from anyone except for the owner. And the cocaine.. what is that supposed to do exactly? You gonna spend a bunch of money to throw coke in their face to get em stoned or...?

Their smell.. is yes definatley greater than ours, but also different then ours. While we smell a hamburger, a dog smells the burger, the bread, the lettuce, tomatoe, mayo... They smell each ingredient individually where we combine all the smells into one smell.

Did I leave anything out? lol

I think the post about the blood and cocaine is referring to the French rsistance of WWII. It was a trick they used when the nazi's would search the boats they hid people in they were smuggling out of the country (occupation zone). The resistance fighters would have a hankercheif or something along those lines with some chicken blood (or other kinds as well), and the cloth would be impregnated with cocaine to numb the dogs noses. This would in turn make it so the dogs would be unable to smell the hidden cargo on the boats and they would pass the inspection and get the refugee's out of the area. Its a historical fact, but how doing this to a dog that would already have seen you or be attacking you would help I think would just be an expensive blunder. As others have stated on this post, there are more effective ways of taking out dogs that are after you.

Thanks GreyKat, for the info .

These days I think know dogs are trained a lot better than that. Dogs who search for humans, do just that now a days. Unless its a POS dog, the dog wont be destracted by an animal because when its told to search for a specific thing, the dog tries its hardest to look for it because of the reward the dog gets at the end. Altho dogs you may encounter during UEing is either a stray or a property protection dog, so mace would be your best and cheapest bet. Theres mace you can get specifically for dogs just incase you get caught, maybe it could be explained better.

Having dogs that are reasonably well-trained, I can tell you one fact about the dogs you saw: They are not police dogs. They're probably just ill-behaved strays.

You were wise not to run. Almost all dog attacks are the result of someone obeying their instinct to flee, and that is always a mistake. Walking slowly away (at an angle that is not 180 degrees) will probably work if the dog is not actively aggressing (4-10 feet away, head lowered, tail down at 7 o'clock, teeth bared).

Staring at a dog that's aggressing is another bad idea. That is confrontational as all-heck and, if the dog is angry or frightened, it will provoke an attack. Stare at the ground between you and the dog and make yourself look as big as you can (works for cats!). Slowly try to get your pack between you and the dog. If you get attacked, protect your entire neck and stomach while ignoring the leg/arm nibbles.

If those had been police dogs you would have been arrested -- pepper-spray or no -- regardless of fancy-footwork or acrobatic ninja-leaps. Trained dogs will keep their distance and 'alert' their master(s) by barking. If they attack, it will be in-tandem, and it will be targeted at subduing you (dogs will block your escape and aggress if you try to move -- called "hold-and-bark" in schutz lingo). They do that very very VERY well. People that say "I got away from these two police dogs one time..." were either carrying firearms and are wanted cop-killers, or they're lying.

Using spray on a police dog is a 2nd to 4th-degree felony in the U.S. (assaulting a police officer) so do that only if you feel your life is threatened -- you'll do hard time if you choose incorrectly.

All prisons have tunnels to explore... But I bet you don't wanna go there. Ewwwww.
