Bring a friend that has pepper spray. Problem solved.

| | | Well, I usually carry a pocket knife with me all the time (including UE) unless it's a place where I think there is a very high risk of getting caught by police. I wouldn't want to have to explain it even if the one I carry is legal. I mostly carry the knife for it's usefullness as a tool, I use it alot work especially, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it to defend myself if put in that position. When UEing, I usually try to go with at least one other person, although I've done many sites alone if nobody was around and it looked reasonably safe. I also carry a pretty hefty 3C battery aluminum flashlight and tripod that would both work pretty well for giving a beatdown if neccesary. I don't really worry about defense too much while out, I'd always prefer to run than have to deal with some sort of confrontation with a hostile person. I've thought about getting some pepper spray for some of the more questionable places we go, but it would probably just end up being another peice of gear that I lug around and don't get much use out of.

This is what I go by, and I have never felt more unsafe than I wanted to be: ALWAYS go with a friend, one you can trust. Train yourself in first aid (emergency response) and insist your friend does as well. Tell someone where you are going, when you should be back, and what to do if you don't show up. Bring at least a 3D Maglite. It's the acceptable, light emitting version of a big metal club. This should be all the security you need - i have to respectfully disagree with those who carry knives or pepperspray - though legal, they can make things alot more difficult if you get caught. Since i figure i am more likely to run into security or police than i am criminals and drug addicts, i tend to worry more about the former and less about the latter.

Any street kid knows how to dodge that stuff unless you attack before they see you. Not saying you need a machine gun and gernades to be safe but honestly safety in an abandoned building is your own comfort level not the equipment. Yeah its partly skilled but who knows what your going to run into.

Remember that guy that got his arm pinned under that rock and used his pocketknife to amputate the arm and save himself? Who knows when it will come in handy...

This is what I was trying to get at with the knife thing. Unless you know how to use a weapon correctly you may either escalate the situation or get yourself killed. Most of the places I UE are far away from any security so I find carrying some pepper spray effective for my skills/needs but it is all about what you feel comfortable with.

It's a very good idea to learn first aid, but it's very difficult to fully train yourself. You should go and find some classes.

An equally, if not more important point, is do you know and understand your state/province/country's laws regarding the use of force and self-defense? With the way the world has become, if you pound someone's skull in with a flashlight or rip his face open with a tripod, someone is almost certain to sue you, and it'd really suck to go to jail because you were overzealous in "protecting" yourself. In this respect, OC spray/foam is "safer" than a flashlight/club/tripod/big knife, because it's less-than-lethal. That's one of the reasons I carry it when explorin'.

sorry, i should have clarified. that is absolutely what i meant. i think anyone exploring without some type of first aid certification, preferably WFR or EMT, is taking a bad risk.

| | | Beyond a little scouting, I've never explored alone. That's a good start. Beyond that, because of their usefulness for some explorations (when there was a small chance of getting caught) I've carried: a tripod, a wrench to remove a bolt, a crowbar for popping manhole covers, and a screwdriver. I suppose, in a pinch, each could be used as a potential weapon. I agree, however, that the best defense is to never put yourself in a situation when you have to defend yourself.

| | | There have been a few occaisons when I've brought a sword with me, as sort of a confidence booster. When you have a sword in your hand you feel like no one can mess with you, whether you know how to use it or not.(and for the record I take fencing classes so I do know how to use it.) I havn't brought one with me in a couple years though, and in retrospect I'm glad I never was put in a situation where I had to use it. It would be easier to explain macing someone, or even clubbing them with a bat in self defense. How do you explain running somone through with a sword?
