| | | Passed by Atlanta earlier this week so decided to pass by this school early in the morning. Just read from belljar13 that it was getting demolished soon though ):. 1. Pretty sure this is familiar to a lot of you in Atlanta:

| | | Wow you got some great shots in there that I didn't even see! LOVE the red lighting coming through. I know what you mean about everything sounding like footsteps. When I first entered I did what I always do....stand perfectly still and listen for movement. I heard nothing so began taking pics in that first room and then heard a scuff somewhere. I was out thru the thankfully huge entry/exit and walking around front within seconds! Then I see this guy and girl walking around from the other side and she's got a camera too. They said they were in there, heard something and ran. Turns out we heard each other haa. They said it was all clear so I went back and got the majority of it before spotting a large guy while taking a pic through an upstairs window (who can be seen blurred in my last pic down on the ground walking) and knew he was heading for the way in and that I needed to get downstairs and out before he got to it. I would say this is one time doing this crazy "hobby" alone paid off because if I'd had to waste even 5 seconds trying to get someone potentially freaking out to understand what needed to be done and how fast to do it, I'd have probably had a little face to face at the opening. There are always risks, but keeping a cool head and getting out safely are key. And hopefully catching a few cool images along the way, which you did!

Thanks! 4-5AM long exposures bring out some crazy saturation in the lighting. I'm glad I didn't run into anyone when we went. When did you go, an afternoon in the weekend? Sounds like some traffic for an abandoned building. I think groups get difficult to manage once you get past 3 man/women cells. I stood perfectly still for a few moments because raindrops dripping onto an empty bottle in a room sounded like breathing... it wasn't until we had the courage to walk into the room that we realized what it really was haha.
Posted by Chris-Kicker great photos. glad to see it's still standing.

There was someone inside the building when I went there this morning. I went ahead and took some pictures on the first floor, but when I heard them moving as if they were leaving, I left ahead of them. This was I think around 9 a.m. I meant to go earlier, but never heard my alarm go off this morning :\. [last edit 11/29/2013 7:03 PM by Malthea - edited 1 times]

| | | i also wanted to add that i find the lighting in this set to be perfect. something about early morning light is always so perfect for shooting and a rainy day really helps set the mood...

| I think a lot of photographers refer to this morning (and evening) light as "The Golden Hour."

Train kids ride freight trains from town to town. When they hit atlanta the tend to stay forever and hang out in the little five square. They have been known to sleep in the school.

That explains the hallway with all the empty sleeping bags. I was constantly wary of homeless people because of those.
Nice photos! We had the same idea of looking down the hallway on your #3 ha. I was looking for the room in your #8 but couldn't find it— maybe it changed a lot since then. Makes me want to go back, but I wonder how long it's going to be until they tear it down.

Thanks! A lot of painters use the term too, but I believe for most of the shots it was an hour too early for golden hour. The red lighting came from some orange streetlamps outside. I had to overexpose the RAW files a bit to compensate for the underexposure too, which makes me wish I shot at 100-200 ISO instead of 400-800. I also think photographers / painters like cloudy skies sometimes because it diffuses sunlight and brings out a lot of local colors, at the cost of less dramatic lighting.
