The ATF and Portland Fire determined that it was most likely arson, but nothing was ever publicized as to who or why. Most people have various theories, most of them revolve around skirting out of a bad investment by the current owners. The area is in a redevelopment mode, and the old hotel was just sitting there, rotting away. It was going to need a serious upgrade for it be used again as a hotel, namely, it was built without a fire sprinkler system. Apparently.
