?

I don't get it.

Sorry, I suppose I wasn't clear; it was far past my bedtime when I was on last night. As some sort of insurance, I like to carry with me the name or names of misspellings of nearby streets or addresses, so that if I were caught, it's plausible that I just got lost. "Oh, SORRY, officer; it's OBVIOUSLY HillSIDE Rd. and not HillTOP road."

I dunno, dumb idea, I guess.

"And when he came to, he was flat on his back on the beach in the freezing sand, and it was raining out of a low sky, and the tide was way out."

I mentioned this once before I think, a couple years back.

I used to like exploring the houses near me in Bakersfield that were in various stages of construction. (ie: new, and abandoned).

When they're reallllly new, you can just walk right through the wall studs.

I was always amazed at how many tools people would leave laying around till they came back the next day. Quite shocking. I'd never leave my tools laying around and drive off like that.

Anyhow, occasionally the houses were "more complete", even to the point of having appliances installed. I'd just wander through them at night and look at different floor plans, just kinda bored. Every now and then I'd find a nice huge jacuzzi bathtub to catch a nap in.

One night I had gone from one house, through the dirt backyard across the spot where they were starting footings for a wall, and over to a "more complete" house.

Sliding door was locked, so I started trying windows around one side. Found a bathroom window that was unlatched. Slid it open. Only it was a good 6ft off the ground.

So I had to grab the not-so-wide windowsill and hoist myself up, then contort sideways to get through, and try not to fall into a heap on the toilet.
(I always loved finding tricky ways to get into houses like that).

So I'm walking around, and I head into the kitchen...

And there's a jacket on the back of a chair, and a cell phone charging on the counter. And SNORING coming from a room about 12 ft away.

I went FROZEN. Just rock still, heart poounding, and listened.

And listened.

Regular snoring noises.

So then I'm freaked out. Do I go back out the bathroom window? Do I go out the front door? What if he's got a cat/dog? Oh fuck.

I tiptoed over to the slider to the backyard, unlatched it QUIETTTTLY, "CLICK!" Oh shit that was loud! Stop.... listen.... (snoring). Ok.

Slide it open as quietly as possible, and got the fuck outta dodge.

Guess he moved in early.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

When out in the country looking for houses or other (hopefully) unoccupied structures; try looking for missing mail boxes, street and/or fire numbers missing. If they are, that is usually a good sign that they are abandoned.

I find the driveway is the best indicator of whether you should go in or not. Is there a locked gate up? Is the driveway maintained? If it's winter, is the snow ever shoveled? If it's summer, is there any overgrowth? If it's at the point that it doesn't look like anyway can comfortably drive in, it probably means the property is not maintained enough for regular use.

I really think this is the biggest factor, especially for country houses where you need to drive to get anywhere. Either the driveway is maintained or it's not.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/
