Downtown Vancouver tunnel entrance?

Please excuse my ignorance if this has been beat to death in the past or if this is common knowledge among full members...

I am aware that there are several outfalls for drains and the like along the Downtown Vancouver waterfront. Nearly all are far too small to even think of entering.

This one caught my eye for 2 reasons:

1. It's considerably bigger than the others, nearly large enough for a shorter person to stand straight in by the looks of it.
2. More importantly its appearance and approximate location match almost exactly to a rumored tunnel that was brought up in another thread a while back.

If what I read is true this tunnel leads deep under Granville Street into a disused boiler room.

Even though these images are highly compressed to fit the 100k limit they are fairly true to real life in the sense that the outfall blends in almost perfectly with the surrounding rocks. I hope to return to this location with a better camera soon and perhaps take a closer look, although the thick bars around the entrance aren't too encouraging.

Sometimes people want to find a tunnel so bad they proclaim a drain to be one. Not meaning you're doing that, but seen it far more times than I've seen real tunnel discoveries... Looks like a drain to me.

I encourage you to return for a closer look and sharper photos. The outfall doesn't look that big though when you compare it to the traffic cone that is sitting nearby.

The story you reference is one that I told after hearing it from a co-worker. I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve him.

One concern is the amount of recent digging that has occurred in the vicinity for construction of the Canada Line. But along that line of thinking, I would have thought the Post Office Tunnel would have been uncovered with the Canada Line work. Would love to see a map of all the tunnels around Waterfront Station done in some sort of 3D so as to appreciate the varying depths.

Rest in peace, my pal Mowgli - the best dog there ever was.

>>>>Minor Update
I returned to the waterfront today with some real camera gear. Nothing much to report though as there was an unmarked cop car parked across the street, he seemed to be focused mostly on his radar gun but it was still enough to make me not want to hop the fence and, as I was on my way to work, didn't have time to wait for him to leave.

I was however able to get some close up shots of the outfall without looking too suspicious. as a point of entry, this outfall looks unlikely as the grate seems to be welded rather than locked or bolted, there are a couple of other, less obvious, possible access points but I don't see posting them publicly leading to anything good.

However this thing is obvious, public and locked enough that it can't hurt so here's some sharper images of it:

The Canada Line passes over the Dunsmuir Tunnel so if this other tunnel/drain/whatever is below the Expo Line the Canada Line construction would not have come near it. If you look at the image below you can see a "hump" where the Canada Line passes over the roof of the Dunsmuir Tunnel, image is from on board a train about 50m from the Waterfront Station platform. The Canada line tunnels run parallel to each other.
