Dried Up Small Town

Yesterday, purely by accident, I came across this town in west Georgia. It was, like so many other small towns off the highway, a town devoid of almost any life. It hadn't been modernized at all. Of course, it had the typical town square and all of the shops on the square looked as they had for many years before it, original signs and all. No cell phone service was to be had throughout what seemed like the entire county. It was one of those towns. I quickly came across two ancient structures and found a way in...

Three big silos flanked by an empty warehouse (not worth photographing). So I spent my time on and around the silos.

I was wondering what they were used for when I took a step and my foot sunk. I was standing in a gigantic pile of peanut shells. How long does it take for peanut shells to decompose?

Luckily, there were ladders that took you to the top of these structures and beyond. All the way to the roof of the warehouse.

I reached the top and found a room with a conveyor belt. I assumed it carried the peanuts to the silos. It was a long room, but the floor was shaky at best and it would've been too dark for a picture.

There's another one of these facilities right across the street from this one with a very tall tower to climb, but it would have to be done at night.

Bonus Picture: Confederate war memorial in the town square. Ironically, this was a primarily black town.

this is great! I'd love to see some larger profile pictures to better understand the process but I know how tough that can be with over grown plants.

Peanut shells take a long time to decompose as they are grown in the dirt and are very resistant to rot. They are not very good for composting because of this trait.

just so you know.

nice find also! small towns are awesome. I used to ride for hours and hours on the back roads finding such small towns.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Nice. +1 billion points for the Confederate monument. Stewart County send many companies of men to the war.
