So I shot both of these photos using my phone. any advice? I usually edit them in photoshop afterwards.

What ghettokumquats said and take a few steps back so you can get your whole subject in the shot (2nd image). I'm also not a huge fan of the gaussian blur tool used in that way (1st image).

I really like 2, it just needs to be straightened. It's got a decent use of fore, mid and backgrounds. If you had the whole building in the shot, then I think it would detract as the subject would be much less clear. With a decent camera, you could shoot with a wide aperture focused on the slide and get the building a bit out of focus, this would further add to separating the subject.

1 is an okay shot, not keen on the blur and it's a little soft. Needs to be straight. Subject matter isn't the most exciting either, though I like that the 'face' of the case is facing into the rest of the shot.

My 2c.
