Goodbye, Home of the Yellow Jackets

I love old schools, and this was one of my favorites: five buildings, including classrooms from the '30s through the '60s, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and a cafeteria. There'd been some vandalism and other damage, but it was a great place to explore. There were still desks, chairs, piles of books, a basketball in the gym, sets on the auditorium stage, little kids' artwork taped to the walls, and even a couple of enlargers in a darkroom.

It closed (I think) in the '90s or early 2000s and has been sitting waiting for the wrecking ball ever since. Which won't be much longer, if it hasn't happened already. Hotwired Heart went down here a few months ago, only to find out that asbestos abatement was underway and that access was pretty limited. These shots are from a couple months later, around last Christmas, when the place was being cleared out in preparation for demolition.

The rubble in the foreground was all that was left of the cafeteria building. The '60s era classrooms, which were behind these two buildings, were already gone as well.

More shots from an earlier visit on Flickr.
