| | | Interesting question considering both tunnels ended up at relatively the same location at the same grade.

| | | According to city engineer Peter Judd the Dunsmuir tunnel is directly below the post office tunnel at the Dunsmuir TC2 stretch. At the CPR station end the TC4 tunnel is very close to the surface and inclines only slightly to get into the building. I think the skytrain tunnel is quite a bit deeper and although it used to terminate at the bottom of thurlow the new termination point at waterfront is quite a bit below ground. I hate those stairs.

| | | When you consider that Cordova Street in front of the CPR station is is supported by post & beam (there is another road underneath it) that Post Office tunnel is quite deep.

| | | There is a stairwell at TC3-TC4 at the bottom of Richards at Cordova that is fairly close to surface and photos below also show the very end of the TC4 tunnel leading up to the doorway into CPR station for the incoming mail system TI-1. looks like it's not too far from the sub-basement of that building-you can also see through to the floor of the sub-basement when walking up that tunnel. I've spoken with John Atkins re this as well as city engineer a while back. I would however like to know exactly where the tunnel is on that street laterally and how it interacts with the rest of the crap under the road. i might have a map somewhere from COV archives that shows that detail i'll have to check. http://www.flickr....1173/in/set-266359 http://www.burtons....net/jhs/node/2316 http://www.burtons....net/jhs/node/2317 http://s3.amazonaw...on/587/11036_l.jpg

| | | Interesting - the windows above the tunnel in the photo from your 3rd link. I guess that must be near the receiving door underneath Cordova Street.

| | | Ya I've been wondering about those windows for some time. Too bad we couldn't get a tour set of the tunnel or even just the CPR building sub basement. What a way to spend an afternoon. then to Rogue for a beer mmmm. Let me know if you have any ideas re the tunnel. it is quite odd and interesting that the tunnel is not only below the street but must be below the sub street level as well. I thought i might have a section map of that area but i can't find it. photocopied a while back at the city archives. arg....

| | | From my uniforms collection, could prove useful. The security on that place is seriously heavy. Maybe not so much on the waterfront side.

I believe from what i heard years ago. that the entrance to the tunnel in the post office is right in the customs area.... not a spot I'd wanna get caught in.
