| | | With the post office moving to Richmond next year, There might be an opportunity to finally get into this tunnel.

| | | I wonder what will happen with the tunnel if they demolish the Post Office. Apparently the Post office building has just been purchased by bcIMC for $160 million.

| | | I think they'd just seal the ends and leave it. It would be too costly and disruptive to cut up all the roadway thru the heart of downtown to fill it in.

| | | I don't see them demolishing the structure, to be honest. It was engineered to survive a nuke strike, and the original design had it as the foundation for a 30 story office tower. Too cost prohibitive to bother, they'll retrofit it like Sears.

| | | I started working near there recently and have been asking the postal workers about the tunnel, a couple of them told me that some years they open up the tunnel for Halloween.. Cant see how i would have missed something like that.

| | | I have been to both ends of the Thornton tunnel as they are pretty active spots to watch graffiti artists at. but after seeing the pollution in the tunnel after a train has gone thru i declined to explore it.

| | | Thanks for the great link. Some neat photos in there of the Post Office tunnel, many of which I have never seen before. Looks like I'll be an old man when the lease on the tunnel finally runs out!

| | | no problem. I think the best pics are the old ones from the 50's they show the complete tunnel system from beginning to end if you dig through the Jewish Archives link. this is one of the TC2-TC3 intersection-Dunsmuir at Richards taken from the TC2 tunnel. http://www.burtons....net/jhs/node/2349

| | | Anyone have any idea where the stairwell at the junction of TC3 TC4 might emerge? It's the intersection of Richards st and Cordova/Water st. I've mapped out all the manholes etc..(see the Richards at Cordova page) and have been down there many times-I live 4 blocks from there-can't seem to find anything. might be covered with asphalt now. there is a large rectangular piece of asphalt at that intersection right now that doesn't show up on street view.

| | | I would be willing to bet the stairwell is somewhere in the Harbour Centre building. It was originally a Federal Government building. I'm curious if the tunnel alignment follows the roadway exactly, is it right down the middle, or off to one side? An interesting aside, the Shine Nightclub (below street level) at Richards/Cordova/Water closed down last year due to "a sinkhole". I'm not even sure if it opened back up again.

| | | Yes that is interesting about the Federal Gov. Building. I've spoken with the city engineer who did the video and he mentioned the intersection of those 2 tunnels is right under cordova/richards st although it would make sense to have that tunnel exit somewhere like the building you mention. As to the tunnel position it is definitely under those streets but as you say i'm not sure if it is to the right, left, centre of the street. The city engineer Peter Judd had no insight into its lateral position. Very interesting about the Shine nightclub hmmmm... I'll hit up the city for more info. Looks like there is no detailed info at the City Archives re the exact depths and postion of the tunnel which is unfortunate.

| | | I wonder how far the sky train (Dunsmuir) tunnel is below the Post Office tunnel Dunsmuir section? Apparently it is directly below it but not sure what depth.
