|  | | | I had seen pictures of this mill on Flickr, just never the inside... But I just knew that it would be worth the drive! I circled the block, waved to a sheriff in an adjacent parking lot, and pulled one street over. I could have taken pictures of these buildings for hours and never stepped foot inside. There is something beautiful about turn of the century construction and how it decays. I slowly began to realize the only way in was off the street in the front... And so being the person that I am, I walked right in for the world to see haha Fortunately all went well and the risk was WELL worth it. It's probably the smallest mill I've ever been in, but it was amazing.
History lesson:
This mill was a very busy and important place for the local economy up until the late 1920's and 1930's when the cotton industry was devastated by the boll weevils. Long lines of wagons filled with cotton waited to to deliver their crops. The cotton went into the machinery to be seeded and packed into huge bales and dumped back into the wagons. The seeds were then crushed to extract cottonseed oil. The farmer would then sell their bales of cotton to local or regional manufacturers of fabrics. The property is now a fertilizer company and the machines lay dormant, in the unused portions of the property, as if they were in use just yesterday.
