Wohoo, New Mexico! um. Yeah.

Hello, I moved from Minneapolis to Albuquerque 2 weeks ago, and for some reason, (sarcasm) and still haven't found much of anything to explore. Especially not underground. It's not easy to open a manhole to get into steam or storm tunnels when there are no A. Trees, B. elevation change, or C. Parks. The Construction worker's outfit is a must. Anyone in the Albuquerque or general New Mexico area and into exploring? Or know any places to start?

Best I can offer: enjoy the weather.
Probably the best you'll do is to check out some of the cemeteries, churches, and little abandoned adobe houses in some of the nearby towns.
Mines aside, the Rocky Mountain West seems to lack much in the way of underground goodness and decrepitude. I've visited the U.'s steam tunnels, but have seen much more interesting elsewhere.

I lived in New Mexico for 9 years and yeah, there isn't much of ANYTHING even remotely cool out there; nothing much that I'm aware of anyway. Coming from Minneapolis, you're bound to be VERY disappointed with NM, unfortunately. I do know there are some awesome mines out there if you're into that & if you're able to find them. There are lots of drains around that you can walk right into; just keep an eye out and you'll start to notice them around. Other than that, the best I've come across in NM are the random abandoned houses & that kind of stuff, which in my experiences there haven't been anything spectacular. I wish I had better news for ya, but welcome to New Mexico anyway!

On the bright side, NM does have the most GORGEOUS skies you'll ever see!

I suppose, as with all the other cool stuff, that I need a car to get to these Mines. The worst part is being able to see mountains every day, and not being able to get to them.

I am also transplant from Minneapolis living in the West.

I have accepted the fact that the built environment will never be as interesting, challenging, beautiful or steeped in history as the natural environment.

Get out in the woods! And the rocks. And enjoy the skies.

The underground in MSP will always be there. Think of it as a treat when you return to MN.

Who needs buildings when you can go get lost in nature for 2 weeks straight?

Gallup, NM. It's not too far from Albuquerque.

There's an old fort which later became a reform school. Well worth the visit.

a lot of Albuquerque is below the Rio Grand in elevation so to keep the river from backing up the storm drains and flooding the town they have about a dozen pump stations that all the storm drains collect into and then get discharged through small pipes into the river.

Oh please.

We have sanatoriums, sanatariums, factories, hospitals, schools, horseracing tracks, churches and more. Its not just mines and abandoned farms. I can be at a mill 5 stories tall at breakfast, lunch at a 100 year old school, and have an early dinner at a 400 year old Spanish fort.

Damn people, get out and see the state. New Mexico is only a shade smaller than GERMANY, and has continuous western style habitation for 400 plus years. Two words: Google Earth. Read it. Know it. Live it.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

There's plenty in NM if you're into history and adventure. A truck is your best friend. In over 15 years, I've never been let down

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.

There are several Missile Silos in NM that are well worth checking out. The are a few ghost towns as well including one that looks like the residents up and left not bothering to pack a lot of their possessions. I don't know of any in Alb, NM but if you don't mind the drive I can give you some great spots.
