Texas' Trinity River is a very interesting waterway. It flows from St. Jo (which used to be called "Head of Elm") all the way to Galveston Bay. It is one of the only rivers wholly contained in Texas. And, settlement-wise, it has more ghost towns along its banks than other Texas rivers.
Following the river south from Dallas one day, I cam to this little town in Kaufman County that used be known as Trinidad. Prior to the Civil War, barges and steamboats came up from Houston. When the railroad came through in the 1870s, the town changed its name to Rosser after it applied for a new post office (the old post office had been discontinued, and the town wasn't able to keep its old name of Trinidad).
I visited it briefly earlier this year, but I need to head back and do a little more in-depth exploring. My husband was in the car and he doesn't like to join me, so I couldn't look around as long as I'd have liked.

| | | | Rosser is still an active city with a small but decent population. However, looking at its downtown it would appear to be a ghost town. They have merged services, utilities & schools, with Scurry which is about five miles away and both straddle the same state highway. I go through it almost daily.

and? why does that matter? its not like rosser is some hidden gem that is completely unknown to the world. its two walls of a once beautiful school. and thats it. why not come down on the title? hell - thats the NAME of the town.

Definitions of ghost towns differ. To me, they're towns that have lost their schools. To others, it's when the post office is closed.

I agree, definitions differ. I prefer to user John Wesley Morris's guideline. he was a professer at Okalahoma University and wrote on ghost towns in the late 70's.
"A hamelet, village, town or city that is no longer in existence, all buildings and indications of existence have been either destroyed or covered by water; where remains of business and/or residential structures still stand but are largely unused and where the population has decreased at least 80 percent from it's maximum."
Based on this definition, I live in a ghost town, which is probably true to anyone driving through.
