Pushed midrange contrast a little further than usual.
Brings out subtle details but perhaps a little gimmicky.
Thoughts?

I don't think it helped you at all that you used the UER uploader. You should have uploaded to Flickr or another site and posted it here. Better quality.

As mentioned, the uploader never makes anything better. But that aside, HDRs always get alot of hate...it's rare that they're orchestrated in a way that doesn't start mass complaining.

I'm fairly picky about them. This one, for me, falls between the nuclear holocaust and 'meh, alright'. It's still a bit heavy for my tastes. But it's not killing me.

While the HDR is pretty bad, thankfully it isn't the only thing wrong with this photo.

UER and HDR don't mix. Don't expect any too many good comments. I have been using HDR for a long time so let me know if you want any tips or tricks. Not blowing my own horn by any means but just saying, I have learned a lot of dos and don'ts.

before worrying about what editing techniques suite your style, you first need to develop a style. First focus on your composition and what you are trying to relay or accomplish with the photo. Aside from the poor hdr this photo breaks almost every rule on composition. Its crooked, and looks rushed. It looks like you just plopped down your tripod didn't look through the finder and just set your camera to auto bracket so what ever you captured could be turned in to the hdr. I dont want you to think im trying to be harsh but you posted in a critique forum and this is an honest critique. Best of luck on your next outing.

D compositions is pretty much one of the only people here I can actually enjoy for hdrs. He does it best! So. Ask and listen if that's what you're into.

Thanks budday!

I have to admit though, when I first learned HDR, my pictures weren't unlike this one. The previous comment about composition is a very good point and one that can get lost by just using HDR. HDR can make any "regular" picture look "cool" (to the user) or different. That alone can make it easy to just get in, set up a tripod and shoot without putting much thought into it. Paying more attention to composition and DoF (if it applies to the shot) should always come first.

Spanks for the input, fellas. Checked out some of your work. Very impressive.

Any tips or tricks on HDR and/or composition would be much appreciated.
It's cool to have access to a site like this.

Like Cbast1en wrote, this is the phase of exploring new techniques and developing a style. I have been exploring for years in Detroit but relatively new to the Northeast and serious photography. (Never wanted to carry anything more than a point & shoot before: I thought that would get in the way of stealth-mode entries; slipping and scratching the shit out of myself, stepping on nails, falling through floors, etc.)
Now that I'm a little older, slightly less retarded, and have a good lawyer, the plan is to slow down and document sites as I explore.

I got my next location targeted. Anyone wants to explore within a few hours of Albany, let me know.

Shit. Seriously, HDR doesn't add anything. I'll give you points for at least not presenting something that looks like it was done with pastel crayons. Can you, for the sake of comparison, provide a non-HDR-ed version? It's hard for me to give these things any merit when they appear so intentionally artificial.

Actually, technically it adds the highlights and shadows back in (whether you like it or not is besides the point).

From somebody who has experienced hdr hate, putting an hdr image on the photo critique section of a UER forum is like dangling meat in front of a lion. Even though i am relatively new here, this is my advice on hdr. As observed by successes and failures of my own.
1. Make sure the single exposure stands on its own merit. Is it worth the shot if the hdr image doesn't turn out.
2. Urbexers want to see a site for what it really is, not for what you think it should look like.
3. Shadows and highlights, its everything.
4. Mix em in. Add a couple of tasteful ones in a set of non hdr images
5. Keep working on it in spite of any hate here. If its what you want to do, be persistent, keep trying new things and usually something will stick.

As to this one, its not bad, but the subject is a little boring for my taste. Decent filler, but not a stand out image.

HDR is okay when it's done properly and not overdone, but when you have a camera that's very capable of capturing different tones and details, get rid of the HDR. It's a waste of time. You will feel much more proud of your photos when you quit with the HDR and work harder in other ways to get the right shot.

This! So much this!

I've seen people with little photography experience produce amazing photos with inexpensive point and shoot cameras. These are people who have the eye of an artist.

Study the rules of composition. Yes, there are actual rules. Learn them and use them. Don't deviate from them unless you know you are breaking a rule and have an overriding purpose for doing so.

Study and learn from the works of great photographers and painters.
