So I've been exploring for a while now, but have finally decided to start documenting it. I know some of my hdr skills are hideous, but like I said this was literally my first time.

These were taken in Oroville CA.

Don't use HDR.
Only experienced photographers who know how and why HDR works should use it. Concentrate on composition and subject matter first.

+1

forget HDR exists, keep shooting though because you can only get better by shooting more.

2, 3 and 4 have pretty legitimate compositions, 1 is very weak, and while the texture is interesting the image needs more of a focus. You've done a good job using compositional lines in the others though.

I don't necessarily see a problem with playing around with the HDR tool, but you will improve faster if you focus on getting a good original exposure, and try to avoid editing as much as possible while you are still learning. Editing and adding effects can become a crutch.

I don't know how much you know about photography, but try looking up the rule of threes, as well as reading up on depth of field. It will help you immensely.

All and all though I think you have a pretty strong eye. Keep practicing!

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I know about slr cameras from using them about 10 years ago, otherwise I've been on 'hiatus' I guess.
Been reading a field guide on my camera while watching/reading tutorials in general photography. I thought I knew lot more, so I'm trying to start learning from scratch.
Currently waiting for my tripod to arrive in the mail. After that I'll hopefully be visiting the Oroville Dam Train Disaster soon.

Any small tips you could give me? I really am not all that huge on hdr , but like the light capturing effect. As I'm slowly learning, I also like to progress in areas I'm more interested in. I'd like to not edit any of them, but I've been using strictly Photoshop for many years,, so I d like that to be my primary piece of software for processing. Thanks in advance
I'm sporting an old camera, but it suits me right for now.

Old doesn't equate to junk. I'll take older, quality glass over large MP and kit lenses any day.
