Learning from failure

Hello! This thread is about all about learning from each other's sticky situations, so others (such as rookies like me), will be less likely to run into problems in the future.

Template:
Description of situation and how you got into it.
What you did to get out of the situation and what happened.
What you should have done in that situation (if it applies).
What you could have done to prevent the situation in the first place.
Some other related tips would be nice.

Thanks!

Here's a good lesson for you: NEVER DRIVE ON THE PROPERTY! Not only is it easier to get busted, but it's also not good for your car if you're not driving something that's meant for off roading. I drove onto the property of an abandoned farm last winter and when leaving I backed up over something... Long story short, a couple days later my car broke down on the south side of Chicago and only about 4 hours and $400 later was I able to return home.

It depends what you drive. And a SUV on the property looks like you should be there anyway.

Like I said, unless you have a vehicle meant for off roading. Also, it depends on the location. An SUV or truck would probably look less out of place, but at some places any vehicle would look out of place.

Trust your gut and have an exit plan, multiple exits if possible, as outside the box as you can go.

My friends and I were exploring an old farm house when we heard someone using keys at the front door. We knew no one had lived there for years, but we were worried it was someone who owned the property. We froze like idiots and listened to the sound until it stopped. Moments later when nothing had happened we went to look, but no one was anywhere in sight.

We learned our lesson, luckily not the hard way. Whoever had been using keys on the door was either messing with us or just looking around, but it could've been a whole lot worse. We hadn't come up with an exit plan and we were completely unprepared for the possibility that someone might be there with us. Like others have said: cover your bases, know the property's exits and hiding places and be ready to move at any moment.

I disagree, it really depends where you are. There are some places you almost can't do without driving in like you belong--you certainly don't always want to be seen walking around with a big tripod and backpack.

The worst thing that's ever happened to me from doing this is being asked to leave and next time ask permission to be there.

Unless you drive onto a state hospital in Mass and are caught. If a cop catches you, you'll most likely be arrested.

Well, then maybe that's just good advice if you're from around here haha. I agree sometimes it's a must in order to get to the property, but if it's a monitored location, or if you can't park behind a building or somewhere that hides your car, I've found it's better just to walk or ride a bike there.

Walking around with a tripod and backpack isn't a big deal if you go when no one will see you. Which I suppose in busier cities might be more of a challenge, but in the suburbs around here even the busy roads are usually pretty dead just before sunrise on the weekends.

I get arrested for needing to pee and I didn't want to do it in public?

If youre seen in or near a building? Pretty sure that wont work. Especially if the whole campus is closed.

Don't take people who probably can't move quickly if the situation calls for it.

Because trust me, they won't, and you will pay for it.

I've learned not to take overly paranoid people. They will make you just as paranoid as they are and will not make the explore fun at all.

Always be careful when going into basements. Buildings can slowly fill with water over time, and the water sits there, totally clear but still extremely unsanitary. The water level may not be at the bottom of the stairs, but could be half a landing up. Whenever you're going into a basement for the first time, don't rush, don't let anyone go faster than you, and always have your flashlight out. Things that are totally underwater don't look wet, especially in low light. Aim your attention at the wall to look for a potential water level.

This is precisely what I'm talking about. One step further and I would've fallen face-first into the water, camera, ex-wife, and all.

I've since seen it happen to another skilled urban explorer; to this day I still tease him about it.

One time I was wanking and I hit myself in the face with the tra-la-la at the end. I ended up staring at myself blankly in the mirror for about an hour, torn between horror and arousal.

I SHOULD have picked out a target beforehand.

I COULD have sat up, but I didn't.

Don't get cocky. The only time I was ever caught was because I was overconfident. We spent the whole day exploring this place with no issues. When it was time to leave we decided the safe way out was too far away so we left through the front... and were stopped by security.
So yeah, don't ever think that you're safe just because you didn't have any issues up until that point.

Only got a warning... but still
