Dartmouth Waterfront House Foundation

I've known this little place for the longest time, It's in plain view, So I walked down before dark and took a few shots today.

I don't know the history on this foundation, After hours of searching for the smallest bit of info, I've come up empty handed.

My only guess is that it was (once) a house around the the Halifax explosion era.
The mortar between the bricks is quite old and chips at the slightest touch. and the ground is overtaking what little bit is left of this spot, So it gives a bit of background on the age of this site.

There is a little hidden graveyard of about 10 grave posts in the area that might be related to the history of this area. Sadly I forgot where it is, But I will hunt for that tomorrow!

Outer perimeter(?) stone wall -

What's visible of the inner foundation -

Some of the many brick pieces lying around -

It is a bit more noticeable in the spring when there isn't so much brush around it. (march)-

Surprisingly quite a few people I know don't know about this little gem. It's in very plain view from the tracks.

It's a nice little spot with quite the view though. I go down there every now and then to watch the sunset. (:

This is a good find. I would be interested in seeing this place, and helping you look for the cemetery.

I'm going to look for the cemetery this evening (if it's still there) and probably take some photos of it. I'll wait on posting photos until you've seen the sites.

I found it. Someone's actually been keeping up with the grounds. There was a recent burial there as well.
About 3-4 years ago it was completely hidden from view, Trees brush, what not.

Interestingly enough there was a foundation on the grounds, Not sure if it was a "crypt" of some sort, or if it was the foundation of a house. I'll have to go back and record the times on the rest of the gravestones and research it up.

A lot of the stones were dated around the time of the Halifax explosion and after. There was one burial stone that said [person] died in the explosion, So I'm going to take a gamble and say this was a burial site for people that died during the time.

Don't hold off posting pics for my benefit. I'd rather see what you've got, and worry about finding the place another time.

Aha. Alright, Here you are then.

One of the few larger gravestones

Some of the destroyed ones in a pile. The dates were unreadable

One of the many tiny gravestones

Foundation(?) on the land.

As you can notice, there are two different textures on the southern side of the foundation.. So who's to say what it is really. However, I'm pretty sure it pre-dates the graveyard.

The foundation you first posted might have been from a train loading area since it's so close to the tracks. Or the remains of a plant or warehouse of some sort, as it would've had easy access to the tracks.
Can you tell how large it was? Or is most of it gone or buried?
Cool find!

Most of it is buried. I might go back sometime soon and dress more accordingly to dig around and take photos.
But my approximate guess is that the stone wall in front is about 7 feet long, and the inner foundation has about 5 feet of the wall visible.

But good guess as to what it is! It could have been a train loading station, or something of the sort. Plus, It's very close to the Tufts Cove generating station, So it could tie into the history of that as well.

Very nice set of pics. This place looks very interesting. Good find!

The 'foundation' in the graveyard is actually just a retaining wall to keep the earth level. They're usually built along family plot borders, though not always.

While there are more instances of this around the city, there's an excellent example of this kind of work in Kentville, at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Well worth the trip if you're into this sort of thing.

Have you been to the cemetery down in Black Point? In Black Point, near a convenience store called 'Thome's Discount Meat & Grocery & Pizza' up a street to the right of it is a little graveyard with some pretty old gravestones. They're all pretty intact and all legible. Some pretty old dates. Creepily, a lot of infants who never made it past a couple months of age.

1.

Edit:

Not really a street, it's more of a trail to the right of it. It's the trail the bikers and ATVers use to get off the SMB-RTT trail.
