| | | What kind of vehicle do you guys drive? Wether it be daily drive or typically only drive for UEXing. Currently I have a not so low profile Forester and while I love it to death and the awd is great, it's just too noisy for me to take on trips. I'm honestly considering selling it to get a Ford Ranger or a Ford Focus wagon. Two very unsuspecting and low profile vehicles. Basically state your experiences with vehicles that you've used primarily for exploring places. Reliability, quietness, usefulness, innocent profile etc...

| | | Yeah I can imagine its nice to have for the size and capability but besides being impossible to hide, it's gotta be a hog on gas.

| | | Subaru is a solid platform to start with... The Legacy is small, has the capabilities of AWD which is awesome for snow, mild off-roading (height wise), and it keeps it going even getting up muddy hills (Western PA has a lot of places to explore way back in the woods that you don't need 2 feet of clearance to make it to). I don't know how many people you tend to take with you exploring, but if I ever have a ton, it gets semi-tedious keeping track of people, especially those who are not 'experienced' due to tendencies to A. wander around/not stick together and B. step on or venture into places they shouldn't. The capacity of five people is more than enough for me. For being 'stealthy' and 'hiding' the vehicle.. I always just park it some place where people wouldn't suspect it and I dress wearing appropriate clothing without looking like a ninja or commando or someone out of a scifi movie. Oftentimes, jeans, solid shoes, and a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt are way more than enough and most times, you look like you belong. When you get out of the vehicle, walk around like you are meant to be there.. have all your gear pulled together, preferably in a backpack. Don't hang around the outside of your car pulling stuff together at a location because that is more than likely to attract more attention. All of this makes 'hiding a vehicle' less of a necessity. Hide it in plain sight. One other thing is it helps to park a little ways away from the location you have in mind. I don't mean ten miles away, but even a quarter of a mile or a half of a mile in a nicer, less conspicuous place as opposed to the side of the road in front of a location can do wonders. Regarding gas mileage... the benefit of AWD always outweighs the benefit of fuel consumption in my opinion. Subaru's tend to get gas mileage in the range of 22-25 mpg. If you want to increase this (even in your Forester), there is a fuse box under the hood most likely on the driver's side (depending on year). If you open it there is one fuse labeled 'FWD' which does just that. It switches the Subaru to front wheel drive (some just change the power ratio) but it still gets better gas mileage and it is an easy change if you are going to be climbing a 30+ degree mud slide of a hill (yes it has happened). Hope this helped!

| | | Like I said I love my Forester so much and I'm going to hate seeing her go but she has 214k miles and is a 1998 so I'm just looking to get something newer in age and miles now. I absolutely love Subarus but this time around I'm going back to the American vehicle route and my two considerations are the Focus wagon and Ranger; preferably in white. Focus would be more roomy and comfortable and have slightly better mpg but the Ranger would have more off road capability and Id have the bed to haul any kind of crap that I want/need.

| | | My girlfriend's transmission in her '07 focus died at ~70k, its apparently a chronic issue they have. The alternator dies every couple years because it is at the back bottom of the engine, causing it to overheat. The ride is terrible and there is a ton of road noise, its completely underpowered. If you liked your subaru, you'll hate a focus.

Personally I think you're insane to get rid of that Subaru if it's still running well - especially to buy a Ford. To look on the bright side, though, you sure won't have any problem selling it. Some other person will put 100k on it for short money.

| | | I agree that "low profile" is a good way to go. As much fun as it can be to have somekinda flashy vehicle, it not only stands out while UEing, it is also more likely to be stolen, burglarized or vandalized. I drive a van. I need it for work and also use it to camp in. Non-flashy also makes it good for stealth camping. And I can keep my UE gear and camping gear with me for spur of the moment opportunities. Gas mileage is bad, but I usually only drive it when I need a large vehicle. I'm also a big advocate of white; it stays cooler and looks more like a business vehicle. IF I were buying a vehicle specifically for UE, I'd go with a plain white pickup or cargo van.

| | | I have been driving a Volvo wagon for a while now. I love my car, its tough as all get out and very reliable. Sadly the shocks are bad, so I drove it as much since I don't wanna destroy another set of tires. So I've been driving a convertible labaron, not exactly inconspicuous, but it's a blast to drive!

| | | Best exploring vehicle is hands down, no contest a late model, bone stock white Ford Ranger. Worst vehicle to live with, slowest, least comfortable and most cramped? Hands down, no contest a late model, bone stock white Ford Ranger.
