| | Easter Island < on 6/14/2012 11:52 AM >
| | | Hi guys, I asked if this would be appropriate or considered UE, and was told sure. I visited this remote island, probably the ultimate in urban abandonment last March. About 15 hours in flights, and a learning experience in travel for me. Just wondering if anyone would like to see some photos? I have over 600. I was alone exploring anywhere I wanted, anytime of the day, no one ever bothered me except to see if I needed a ride...friendliest people! I went by bicycle, jeep, and foot for six days. I tried to find all the hidden stuff, not just the attractions. The ruins are treated with utmost respect by the islanders. I found the dump, the power, the runway built at length for the Space Shuttle to ever land, a NASA station, the transport roads of the statues with abandoned ones grown over with grass(not on any tours). I even walked downtown at night, with a pack of dogs that joined me and grew to about 10 of them. Some were very hungry and I had to keep them off me. Just a very cool place overall, Let me know, I will attach a few pics.

| | | Yes, I would absolutely love to see more of your pics! Looks beautiful!! This has been on my list of places to go for a long, long, long time now. The roaming with a pack of hungry dogs, at night sounds a bit unnerving. Really looking forward to seeing more of your pics and hearing your stories. Thanks for sharing.

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark. |

Thanks! It is well worth the trip if you like that kind of adventure. Definitely not a beach vacation, although there is one with sand and palm trees and even a statue platform restored there Anakena. Yes, the dog walk is not in the brochure, something that kind of happened. It was scary the night walk. I wanted to find a place to have a drink, and get night shots of the Moai statues. I just bought my Fuji "tough" XP for the trip and wasn't sure how to properly operate it at night so those photos didn't turn out. The cabin dog "Michigan" an awesome German Shepherd followed me everywhere, never left my side the whole time, and fought off the rogue dogs. But eventually the pack grew to a few more then I liked. But I walked most of the time for an hour freely downtown, with the dogs like the Dog Whisperer. You can't do that at an all-inclusive resort. The night life is reserved to a few crazy looking bars, and I didn't bother. It is so relaxed there, that most places don't open until 10am or so. It was dark until about 830am in March. It was hard to find a decent coffee also being a loyal Tim's customer. I just sufficed with the instant Nescafe in my cabin. I mostly hit the store in the morning, grabbed 3 litres of water, a 6 pack of Escudo beer, some bananas, threw it in a knapsack and went touring. Once you are out of town Hanga Roa, there is no facilities, except at the beach, the quarry, and the main restored platform (a local lady with some cokes, and fruit). But this is all within 20 km of town, so if you can't make do that long, or haven't prepared you would be okay anyway. The island is a national park, and all garbage must be returned to town with you. I couldn't believe the respect of the tourists, as the place was barren of any garbage. It was also forbidden to go on the platforms, even the base. Some tourists were trying for photos, and got yelled at immediately. Very impressive the respect everyone had! In the middle of the Pacific, that such a small place exsists is amazing!

No, I don't have Flickr, a good idea for such an opus. I will look into that. I wish I knew how to document such an amazing experience, as I have enjoyed many in the UER community, and owe it back. Most of the photos do not do it justice. The atmosphere and feeling of being there was the best...alone, wondering why?, waves crashing, stars for miles at night, freedom.

| | | No,the polar bears were on holidays, too far to swim. The only animals abundant were dogs, horses everywhere wild, and some cats. Where is the foot from? It fits the picture of the quarry, nicely.

Yeah, some caves. All over the place, and I didn't go into far. I was alone, no 911 there.

| | | My most favorite is pic #13, If you have an eye you can see in almost dead middle of the photo, a carved statue in the mountain "el gigantico". He was the biggest one quarried still lying in wait, almost 30 metres(70 feet). He was visible from a mile away if I looked hard enough.
