Can't really say I'm a fan of that grunge look. The before is much more pleasant to the eyes. Dare I say it, the grunge one just has too much stark contrast.

We didn't need a story. We didn't need a real world. We just had to keep walking. And we became the stories, we became the places. We were the lights, the deserts, the faraway worlds. We were you before you even existed.

I would try layering and blending them, resulting with the walls having a contrast a little closer to the original, and the floor about how it looks in the 2nd.

mutantMandias may cause dizziness, sexual nightmares, and sleep crime. ++++ mutantMandias has to return some videotapes ++++ Do not taunt mutantMandias

mutantMandias is something more than human, more than a computer. mutantMandias is a murderously intelligent, sensually self-programmed, non-being

I think too much lighting and detail is lost in the grunge. I'd try to find a medium between them.

Before by a longshot. The after is too dark, and something about it just seems very fake to me.

Nothing about "after" is better than "before".
Actually the only thing really wrong with "before" is the highlight and that wasn't even fixed in "after". Infact it was made worse because of the contrast of the darker wall.

.... Before, all the way.

From the two you posted i would say before, but an in between would be cool to see. I think a bit to much contrast in the second not quiet enough in the first.

Would it be possible to fade the darkened right hand corner to a slightly more neutral color and somehow combine the two so you had a sort of 'advancing decomposition look?' Like, if you had the area around the light source be unaltered and have the grunge effect feathered in gradually so that by the bottom of the pic it was fully applied? I dunno if thats possible, but in my mind it would create an interesting visual effect, like the light was driving away a darkness that was trying to advance upon it.
