Actually the only thing really wrong with "before" is the highlight and that wasn't even fixed in "after". Infact it was made worse because of the contrast of the darker wall.

Like, if you had the area around the light source be unaltered and have the grunge effect feathered in gradually so that by the bottom of the pic it was fully applied? I dunno if thats possible, but in my mind it would create an interesting visual effect, like the light was driving away a darkness that was trying to advance upon it.
