This. And/or gummyworms. As for 'scary feelings' I've had that feeling occasionally, but since I usually explore with friends, I've always ignored it. So far everything's turned out OK.

| | | My first response on this topic was well-thought-out and detailed. I didn't jump on the OP till he started contradicting himself.
Sometimes if Im alone and I'm rappelling down a mineshaft with noone around I get this "whew!" feeling going over the edge but it doesn't last more than a second or two these days.
Being chased by security and cops gets my adrenaline to dump though. Its certainly more exciting.

| | | The adrenaline rush is pretty much standard, but the fear you sometimes feel isn't. Plan out your approach, understand the possible risks, and make sure your group is on the same page as you. By carefully analyzing the scenario, you can avoid irrational fear. The old FDR saying about fearing fear itself is very true in a UE context - fear will be more dangerous to you than almost anything else you might encounter. It will erode your reasoning ability and cause mistakes to be made. If you feel fear closing in on you, stop moving and close your eyes for a moment. Breathe deeply, and collect yourself. Then continue.

Because you haven't banned MrShitvials yet.
Also, I would have to say that solo exploring always gives me a bigger adrenaline rush then exploring with others. And, I agree that it's always more exiting/scary the fisrt time you explore a location or when your first learning about exploring then it is after you've become jaded to it.

| | | Post by barefootpoetry Usually when I get that GTFO feeling, I do it....when it persists and I can't enjoy an exploration because of it. I always get the jitters when I first enter a location: my hands shake, hair stands on end, jump at every single sound. But after a few minutes I relax. I think it's normal to feel that adrenaline rush, especially your first time. It'll get easier. Bring friends, that helps. I feel much more confident with a buddy. |
I have to agree with you about the GTFO feeling... To me, it's like when getting depressed when drunk or stoned--sometimes the best thing to do is go to sleep rather than fight the feeling and not enjoy yourself. If I get that persistent bad omen feeling, I go home, and try again another day. Usually I enjoy the explore a lot more. The feeling does go away, but, to use another analogy: it's like stagefright. When you use stagefright, you can control the feeling and better your performance. When you get that 'rush' feeling, you can use that to feel more energetic, more alert, more aware of risks, dangers, and sounds. I find now, at this point, when going to a new location (or even ones I haven't visited in a while), I feel pretty epic when I get that 'rush'. You get a little high from it (as some folk here have said). Mind over matter. Use that rush and turn it into the 'fuck yeah feeling' rather than the 'shitting my pants feeling'.

I think this is best decided personally. Daylight can be your enemy just as easily as darkness. Know when it's best to use a bright flashlight, and when a very very dim one is your best option. If you fear going out at night, you can potentially miss out on lots of opportunities you wouldn't have otherwise.
|
I agree with you completely. Night is neutral. Night time has more foreboding feelings attach to it though, and not being able to see who or what (same for them) is there can raise or lower your fear level depending how you feel about it and skill level. I find that breaking the least amount of laws and trying to avoid looking suspicious lowers the issues what I need to be concern with and my anxiety as well.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

You should be apprehensive the first time and not drop your guard. Sites can be dangerous, and many have hidden hazards. I disagree about subsequent visits being jaded unless it's a boring shithole to begin with. Large sites take time to find the interesting spots, and learn what to look out for. Intimate knowledge of a sits allows more effective use of your time, and better results. The risks are still there, but there is less to fear from the known.
