| | WWII Gun Battery < on 3/4/2012 12:30 AM >
| | | During WWII this large bunker housed multiple 16-inch guns that were specifically designed to defend the naval bases and shipyards in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. This caught my interest. I was curious as to whether any of the mechanics or artillery was still decaying inside. This was my search... 1. After meeting up with some other explorers we arrived at the bunker's entrance
2. Walking into the main opening we could start to understand the scale of the massive cement and iron structure that was nestled deep in the landscape around us
3. I started my way down the main corridor. It was very long, dark, and musty.
4. The top floor was filled with empty rooms containing nothing but the remnants of the iron tracks that carried to guns in between being battle-ready and their storage rooms
5. After about six rooms just like this of varying sizes I came across a small hallway with stairs leading to the lower level
6. A few rooms contained what looked to be large metal storage boxes. Long since rusted shut I had no chance at opening them without causing damage so I left them be
7. I also found smaller closet sized rooms with extremely oxidized pipes and pumps running into the floor leading me to believe that there was yet another lower level
8. I followed the line of pipes that snaked their way across the ceiling down the hall, around a corner, and through a door
9. and found myself at another stairwell leading down another dark hallway
10. Towards the back of the hallway was an ancient door that was just begging to be opened, and with a little effort it was. I just knew that something amazing was waiting on the other side.
11. Stepping into a room that felt like it had not seen life in years (and the air smelled like it as well) that was littered with debris and riddled with holes rusting through the floor
12. The pipeline finally ended in this room. There was evidence of an extremely large piece of equipment that the pipes at one point hooked into that had been removed. Judging by the distance to the top and the size of the hallways, it was probably dismantled piece by piece
13. this was also located in the same room as the mysterious piece of vanished equipment. it stood a good twelve feet tall and look like it weighed more than a ton
14. On the way out to locate the stairwells to the surface level I noticed a door that used to lead from the outside. Long ago covered over by the mound of sand and soil that engulfs the bunker. One of our beloved strongholds breached by the shear weight of mother earth forcing her way in to one day swallow this structure back into the earth

| | | Possible reason for the pipes and missing equipment: Between each firing of the guns, the bores needed to be cleared of any debris remaining from the last shot. This debris might be smoldering so it had to be removed. Compressed air did the trick. So, after each firing of the gun, someone had the responsiblity to turn a valve and blow all debris from the barrel. Soldering debris were dangerous because such embers could ignite the powder that was encased in silk bags.
