The cozy farmhouse

Thought I would post something a little less history intensive. Came across this on the old highway 77 which was the main route north from Guthrie to the Kansas state line until I35 was constructed and traffic dried up overnight.

This old farmhouse was just off the road near the small town of Orlando. Today about 200 people live there. In 1893, it was where 36,000 people registered for the 1893 land run. The old house caught my eye as I was driving by, so I had to turn around and go check it out. Even in its deteriorated state, it still looked cozy.

The house had been well built. Note the single pillar support on the small porch. It's not actually touching the brick, yet the porch barely has any sag.
The bay window was a nice touch, especially for the era.

It's age is tough to determine. A brick and stone foundation with plaster lathe interior, so probably very early 1900's. There had been a barn or out buildings, but they had been dozed into a pile, probably after they collapsed.

There were two wells, one some distance from the rear of the house, probably for barn and livestock use, the other just outside the kitchen close to the house. The rear well was a standard hand pump. There was also a small pond.

The house well had originally been a standard brick well, it had been "modernized" with a slab cover and crank pump. The was also a small cistern designed to catch rainwater near the kitchen.

Two chimneys, one for the living area, the other for the cook stove in the kitchen. Electricity had been added, but no sign of indoor plumbing, so an outhouse had existed somewhere.

The old sidewalk was interesting.

The rear doorway. I could almost hear someone yelling not to track mud in.

Note the old curtain still above the rear doorway.

"Somebodies pride and joy, once, long ago."

Yes, so true.

DW,

You do such a great job of making the places you find come alive for the reader! Even when your posts are "less history intensive", you manage to tell a great story between your photos and your narratives.

You do amazingly great work and it is well appreciated!

Thanks again!

Ahhhhhhh. My kind of explore. Maybe I am biased because these sorts of places are in plentitude where I'm at, but I find old farmhouses and the like to be such enjoyable, peaceful, imagination-stirring settings. Excellent photos, a nice find for sure.
