Distant Early Warning station East of San Diego

On a nice sunny San Diego January morning some of my UE buddies and I approached from the South. We had little trouble finding the location as we had a coworker do a report from the location and we had his directions. As we climbed into the mountains we started seeing snow, this was a bit shocking since it was 70 degrees at the base of the mountain! It made me with I had worn boots.
There were signs posted about work being done to the location, but as it sits very ear to some hiking and camping spots we had a good cover story prepared.

MY buddy had his cold WX face on.

We parked the car when the snow got too deep and walked the rest of the way. We quickly came across what must have been a boiler room. My favorite part was the chroma key green bathroom.

Next we visited the mess hall that was pretty torn up.

I wanted to go down stairs but though better of it.
From the mess hall we crossed over to the barracks.

The barracks were stripped pretty bare, but still cool.
They also provided a good view back to the mess hall.

Up a long and icy flight of stairs we came to the “Special Services Office”. This turned out to be a gym, movie theater, bowling alley.

As we were poking through the bowling alley, we heard a truck. I took a cautious look through a cracked door and saw it was a ford Ranger with an official looking seal on the door. We waited till it left and moved on.
Past a building that was in the midst of having its asbestos removed and up more icy stairs we approached a bar/club. Time weather and the wildfires that ran though the area in the early 2000s had done a number on it but by far the most damage was done when some one hung some appalling wallpaper.

As we left this club and were headed back down the stairs where the truck with the seal found us on a bit of road with no cover. He listened to our story and told us to scram. I think having my buddy’s son with us leant our story some weight. We walked back to the car and proceed to try and drive out. Sadly the SUV was meant for purely domestic adventures, and it took us probably a dozen tries to get up an icy hill. After all why would a car that spends most of it’s time in San Diego have chains? I do, but people call me paranoid. Who is laughing now! Where was I? Oh yeah, when we finally got back to the main entrance, we found the gate we had drive past was now closed, and we had to find someone to let us out. Only minor levels of humiliation there…

Beyond that I would recommend that you check this out if you are in the area, only visit in the spring to avoid snow and on the weekend to best avoid the civilian contractors.

Nice one, good to see more activity from the San Diego area lately. Maybe from now on when others head down that way we might have locals to explore with.

Interested in seeing some more shots of the Theater and Bowling Alley for sure!

Also, thanks for putting the photos up this time without the thumbnail style. Some people (myself included) tend to skip over the thumbnail stuff, or doesnt open well on mobile phones.

Nice to see updated photos of this place. If I remember right, someone posted a bunch of historical photos back in its hay day. I remember searching around and hearing stories of this place via Google. But very well done and thank you for sharing! Glad y'all made it out safely!

Has anyone been to this location since this? My photo set was from about a week before this article is dated.

I'm confused. The pics in your initial post were posted today. Are you saying that you took those pictures a year or two ago and just posted them today? I'm assuming that's the case because from what I know, that whole abandoned Air Force base has been torn down (or is in the process). They started doing that last year after funds came through. I'm not sure what the current status is, but I would guess that the buildings in your pictures are no longer there. I do know that the old octagonal-shaped radar tower has been torn down. They also erected a tall, black, chain-link fence around the area.

Ahh, my favorite explore in SD! I love seeing pics from this location. Last I heard, it was all gone. I haven't bothered investigating for myself. Definitely makes me a little choked-up when I think about the fact that they tore it down, or are in the process of tearing it down.

Yes you have it right. I just found this site and decided to share a good explore. When I was there the chain link fence was up. The people who kicked us out worked for the company that was removing Haz Mat from the place.

I was there in the summer time last year. The vast majority of the place is now gone. The barracks were still standing, as was the officers quarters. They were pretty much gutted on the inside.

The bowling alley, mess hall, generating station, fallout shelter, etc were all gone with only a dirt piles remaining.

Dozens of sealed barrels containing lead were scattered across the site, waiting to be hauled away.

Surrounded by a second fence, is a few remaining radar stations that have been upgraded and repurposed, complete with FAA surveillance cameras monitoring them.

Personally I'd pass on this place now. Not much to see now.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw those pictures. The placed is almost totally razzed now. Major bummer. One of these days I'll post the pictures I took a few years ago. I started processing them and then...
