Old ghost town newspapers

So I was exploring some abandoned houses around the ghost towns of Skedee and Blackburn Oklahoma and discovered some old newspapers from the area, including a couple out of Kansas dating from 1891 up through the early 1940's. There were also a couple of year books, one from 1931, the other from 1948.

I'm taking the old papers and year books to the county historical society, but snapped some shots before I did. One of the most interesting ones was a Skedee paper from 1906, which was literally trying to crumble to dust. I found some of the old adds both sad and amusing, so thought I would post some of the stuff here.

This is probably still out there somewhere...

The corner Barber shop. The tonsorial line? Love the refund offer in the second one.

Looks like there were two banks at one time. The Citizens State bank voluntarily liquidated in 1928. The Skedee State Bank failed Dec 27th, 1932. No bailouts back then.

1906 was when news of the Wright Brothers flights went national

Going out of business.

Ice company in Pawnee sold both Ice and Coal. The old "Freeze and Steam" approach.

Meat, it's what's for dinner.

Groceries, lots of groceries.

Physicians and hospital. No contagious or insane people please.

Hardware, Lumber and Livery

The Buffalo Theater in Pawnee. The building still stands. Free stockings! Who knew?

Final rest.

Hitting the road in your....eh....Brisco.

Some tunes for $6,000, er $250, no wait.....

80 years ago I could have taken a train almost anywhere from my little town. Progress. Damn sure wish I could today.

Those new fangled telephones.

Drinking establishments! They were everywhere before statehood!

Food joints and gas stations.

Hackline between Skedee and Blackburn. Only took a couple of hours, give or take, to go about 5 1/2 miles, depending on the horse.

Where the smart shopper shops!

To examine and peruse.

We're all just kin! WTH does that mean?

No, it won't burn your house down.

This pill fixes everything!

Marketing. Works every time! Grab a Bevo and kick back....

Everybody loves a circus! Except maybe the dog....

Victorius!

This cotton gin was in business over 50 years. Nothing remains of it but an old road called appropriately, Cotton Gin road.

For an overnight stay. Funny finding the old adds to go with the photos I had.

Skedee and Blackburn before statehood.

From the year book. The Skedee School circuit 1931

Lest they be forgotten....

Fully agreed with Lackluster...I could pore over this stuff all day.

In other news..."Rats $1.25 a day" at the Commercial Hotel? How ever could they possibly satisfy demand?

I loved the rats! I spent several hours reading through them. They really gave some insight to the era and people. I'll never view the little ghost town of Skedee the same again.

I don't know if I'd trust a barber named "Harry".

I'll take one new Studebaker. It may be the most pricy of the new cars offered, but I think I can scrape up the cash.

dwtaylor is an amazing contributor to this forum! Always great threads.

New cars for $1045, but record players for up to $6000? Wow!

Very nice.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

Meant include this photo from the 1931 yearbook. Seems they were a bit less politically correct in the old days. The young ladies name was Beulah.

Indeed. And I thought we were an entertainment-driven society TODAY; I had no idea it was so bad back then!

Just noticed, in that pic of the Cottage Hotel...the scratch on the picture makes it look like the proprietor has his bowstaff out and is gettin' ready to put a beatdown on the women-folk!

Fantastic thread. "Build your own telephone line"? Wow! They would never allow nor advertise that today.
