Grist Mill

This mill was built in the 1930's east of Charlotte. I've known the ruins were here but didn't check it out till today and was surprised at how much of the mechanics remained. Let's take a little tour...

1. Approaching the mill from the greenway.

2. This is the flume which directed water to the mill.

3. From the flume, water was directed through this pipe

4. And into the structure here.

5. The pipe ended in this box at the corner of the mill.

6. The water left the box through this chute.

7. And it's power turned the waterwheel.

8. The center of the water wheel.

9. The inner and outer parts of the wheel once had a wooden frame between them, it is mostly gone.

10. The wheel shaft goes through the wall. There was probably a wooden bushing here.

11. From the inside.

12. The water wheel turned this large gear, called the pit wheel.

13. The pit wheel then turned this smaller gear, called the wallower.

14. The wallower was attached to this long vertical shaft. This mainshaft would have run through a hole in a stationary grindstone, called the bed stone.

15. This is the running stone at the end of the mainshaft, it would have turned around on the bed stone, crushing grains between them. This wheel could actually be disconnected from the mainshaft so power could be used to run other belt or gear driven devices.

16. The rest of the running stone.

And that's how the mill worked. Now please enjoy some other pictures from the site.

I Love old Grist Mills, I have hunted them down all over Carroll County, MD. I appreciate all the history and hard work that it took to make them run. Thanks.
