Freak's pictures crack me up. Scrappers crack me up too, for some reason.

I live in the general vicinity and stroll through that place every now and again. Lots of construction/demolition work has been going on around there the past two months. Bridge has been gone for over a week now. I would hate to see that place destroyed, it was one of the first buildings I ever went to. I remember last fall scouting out another silo nearby a certain beverage factory named after the street it resides on... there was construction going on too and there was a small fire burning right by the workers. Smelled horrible. So maybe what you saw was a controlled burn..?

Shitty either way, and sad to hear about olive, that place was gnarly.

I was poking around the area saturday, but figured the burning smell was just the homeless man I saw hauling away/burning grain to stay warm.

I wonder what it would smell like if we burned a homeless man.

Shit, I was out walking tonight and I come back here and discover I missed out on all the fun!

I went by there to check it out tonight. All was quiet at the mills. I was wondering why I had déjà vu when you told me about this, like 5alive said, someone else thought some kind of fire was going on last weekend. Mysterious.

I'm guessing it would have some mild notes of well-aged 1990s miami dolphins jacket.

Homeless people have been camping in that area as long as I've been around. It's probably a fire started for warmth that got out of control. If the building wasn't supervised by fire fighters it's probably not a controlled burn. I'm going to miss that skyway. It was one of the vestiges of the old mill hell, where similar conveyor/skywalks criss-crossed between all the grain elevators there.

Workers are in there cutting up the machinery with torches and throwing it out of the building, prepping for demo it looks like. The smoke was from smoldering damp grain left over in hoppers. Probably molten steel fell into one of the many open access hatches.

a somewhat curious dike of sorts seems to have appeared. I can't say I remember it being there too long ago.

also, it seems like Harris Machinery Co has been cleaning up around their area lately...perhaps that place will not exist much longer?

OMG not a curious dike! That's the WORST KIND!

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

I was there today, and a week ago. They're scrapping the rollers and the railings inside, and burning all of the old grain that was in there. Probably gonna knock them down soon. Visit while you can!
