| | Right, so basics for the newbie, like car parking < on 2/5/2012 3:14 AM >
| | | I am going on a major Urban Exploration trip soon, which I'm very excited about. Here's what I know: 1 Location is by a small, rural college, on a semi-busy road. This is a repeat visit, and what I experienced last time I went was, the grass (it was Spring) was high enough to cover me from the road. I'm not sure if I'll be as well-covered, but I'm hoping going Sunday Morning will keep the traffic down around here and I won't run into any issues. It's a farm complex, with a silo, two tiny buildings, and one giant building, which has had its roof removed and is sitting by the side. I entered the giant building last time, but did not attempt to go up the stairs, due to the fact that, what's left of the roof has collapsed in, and the building shakes when the wind blows. The reason for the re-visit is, I believe there was something I missed covered by the long grass that happened to have covered me. The others are a series of buildings, mostly houses, on a rural road that had no traffic whatsoever. (In the collective 15 minutes I spent there, one car went by.) None of these houses appear to have neighbors. The last is a farm across from a school. This one I have permission to go into by the owners, who have just requested that I close the gate behind me, though it appears locked, so I may have to fence-hop. So, here's what I should know: 1: I have a decent case for my camera, with some nice padding that's kept it well. 2: I have a flashlight, a cell phone, and can coerce someone into playing backup for me. 3: I have a dark red car that is... kinda noticeable. So, what should I do? I had no problems parking off the road last time for the farm complex, but the houses are a different story. How do you guys typically handle transportation? What other supplies should I bring? I was quite under-prepared if anything were to have happened in the farm complex, since I couldn't get my back-up to go on the property with me, and I want to be safe rather than sorry.

| | | Since your backup won't be going on the property with you, have him/her leave with your car and go for a short drive to a point where they can park. Call said friend when you need to be picked up. Most of the time I just park in the driveway and do my business. In ten years I have only been caught, yelled at, approached by gun toting hillbillys 4 times max. The odds are with you. [last edit 2/5/2012 3:50 AM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

| | | Drop off & pickup driver. OR Park a few miles out and ride a bicycle in. You're on a bike ride, just looking for a discreet place to take a leak. [last edit 2/5/2012 4:33 AM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

| | | Not to be a dick, but it really doesn't sound like the most challenging location, or one that cops would even really care about. Park out front and stroll in like a boss, if anyone asks questions just say you are a photographer.

| | | Yeah Captain, these are kinda test runs... my big goal would be to someday enter the factory nearby, which happens to be located right by the police station. However, due the constant renovations the past few months I get the feeling it's not what I hope it is. And this summer I'm going out of the country and going into an abandoned mental asylum down the road from where I'm staying.

| | | Doesn't sound like it will be too much of a problem. If anyone says anything just tell then that you into photography and kept seeing really great shots. Apologize for wandering too far onto the property and take it from there.
A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |

| | | In residential areas, if you're not going to be very long, you can just park on the side of a strictly residential road, preferably a dead end. Most people just figure you're visiting family or friends--try not to be in front of a house if you can help it. Walk from there...never had a problem with this. Sometimes you can literally just park at the place you're about to explore. If you see the workers for a nearby business use the old lot of the abandonment for spare parking...and signs don't tell you to get out, just leave your car there. Never had a problem here either. Come to think of it, I've never had a problem with parking. A friendly note once from a business said please don't

| | | I've done drop-off and pick-up, parked at nearby businesses, but my most common is usually parking in a nearby neighborhood and walking in. My favorite is when there is a neighborhood a quarter mile away by foot, but a mile+ away by road. Just an extra layer of security. I've only had problems parking once. I was trying to park onsite and security was driving out while I was driving in and we met on the wrong side of what was a locked gate. But for what you're doing, just parking on the side of the road 1/4 mile away or so will be fine.

| | | Parking has never been an issue for me either. All the places I have been to, so far, have been located in walking distance to a shopping centre. Those make for the best parking but you have to go during business hours so your car doesn't stand out. The only thing that crosses my mind while I am exploring is.......DAMN, I hope my car is still where I parked it when I come out. I have been dropped of before but my driver was a little pissed when I called 7 hours later and said that I was finally done......can't use him again.....lol. Sounds like you should be fine if the residental area is that secluded.

| | | If you're worried about it, join the late model white ford ranger club. Since they are the vehicle of choice for every city, county, contractor, and building inspection fleet ever you can go and park anywhere if you have one. Me and my buddies used to pile into mine and throw on some orange construction vests and drive straight into construction sites and try to convince the workers that they done goofed bad and the whole road/bridge/building needed to be 4 feet to the left. Worked once, that was hysterical!!!

It depends what it says, are you having the name of a town/state on it, or some made up company? I think it would be better to have no identification and have people wonder if your part of the company that should be there, then have the name of a company that certain people know doesn't belong there or exist.

| | | Oh yeah, if you're parking in a store's lot, try to find lots with multiple stores. If you're going to be a long time, a single store might figure out you're just using them...especially if everyone else leaves! If there's a few stores they're not gonna collaborate to figure out what car belongs to what customer.

Get one with some kind of company logo on it, make sure you make this logo up so you can't be sued for driving other peoples logo around. Something that looks like geo-something I probably will make myself something like this for this hobby and for geocaching as well.
