When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Do you live in/near Houston? A little scouting goes a long way- there are lots of abandoned buildings here. What kind of location are you envisioning for the shoot? "Abandoned places" can mean many different things- if you're just looking for some peeling paint or graffiti to use as a backdrop, that won't be hard to find. If you're looking for something more; the east and north-east parts of town have lots of run-down homes and warehouses.

What would you define as "safe"? I live in the "run-down" section of Houston (where the abandoned stuff is) and am definitely in a lower economic caste so I feel comfortable rolling around with my camera and poking around a bit when I see something interesting. People recognize me, or at least can tell that I'm not an outsider so it's "safe". I don't know anything about you- but if you're not from the area, and especially if you have money then rolling in with fancy equipment and hanging around abandoned buildings might make people uncomfortable. Just be courteous.

Property ownership can be an issue too- many of the really interesting abandoned buildings I've seen are not places you can just walk into. Doing some research there could help out. Harris County has some good tools for looking up ownership; showing a strong portfolio might get you unfettered access to locations for the project.

Sorry if I'm just telling you things you already know- the question seemed a bit vague so I'm trying to be clear in my answer.

houston is starting to loose all the good spots. same with galveston.

u can check east hosuton for all the warehouses. its ghetto and dangerous tho.

but thats only half the fun.

My advice to you is to make friends with locals.

Google Maps/Earth, Google search and local public records can be your best friend. And what Astro said.
