We had a "blast" today when we visited this abandoned site. Complete with roads that have long since been swallowed by the woods that surround them, random hydrants strewn about the location dated back to 1942, and an abundance of structures to explore. Named for the mythical Greek goddess of victory, this location was in operation from 1955 through 1974. Well worth the visit if you do some research and know what your looking at.

Good stuff. I love that panoramic with all of the towers in it! Did you find the giant concrete water tanks? They're near the hospital.

This is nitpicking, but the grid of roads & fire hydrants are from when the site was named for a 18th-century patriot, before part of it was re-purposed and named for the Greek goddess.

Not at all...your absolutely correct. It was late when I posted and forgot to mention C.P.H.

(no we didn't find the water tanks. we arrived later than expected so we didn't wander much. Plan on going back soon to further explore so thanks for the tip)

Oh, something else... if you look at aerial photography of C.P.H., if you look to the SW (across the road) you can see the big concrete railroad station platforms. May be worth checking out.

I was wondering what that was. My friend and I will have to take a day and wander. Thanks for all your input. (+1)

Comm center basement?!?!?! At cph? I looked for that last time i was there... Is there one or were you guys talking about somewhere else? The rail loading area across Mcmanus? Also because of the towers, I know there has to be a silo/fueling area somewhat close, but I've combed those woods and idk where the hell that might be... any ideas?

Comm center basement?!?!?! ?

There would not be a "comm center basement" at either of the two locations that normally make-up a Greek Goddess of Victory site. "Comm Center" would have been in one of the trailer vans at the IFC portion of the complex.

IFC? Did u used to work at one of these sites? there's actually a park relatively close that still has the barracks, chow hall, px and such intact. it also has the fueling pad/prep area, im wondering if any of the underground stuff is still intact, but its prob full of water cuz its right next to marsh land.

Well, I'm going along with the game or serious OPSEC of not exposing what the site actually was, but yeah, when places like that are no longer needed for the reason your Uncle bought it for, they first have to offer the property to any of Uncle's other relatives, then the state, then the local gov't. If none of them want it, it can be offered for commercial or private sale.

That's why a lot of the sites were turned into parks, etc.

Sounds like this particular setup had three functional areas -- the Admin area where the guys lived & recreated, the launcher area with the underground storage magazines (used to save space, not really to protect those uh... shoes...), and then the IFC (usually on a hilltop) where the RADARs & controller people were.

There are some old threads about this stuff where I've gone into more detail, and lots of info on the web. The only real "Comm Center" type place with this program would have been at the higher-headquarters -- the regional AADCP.

Checked out the Railroad loading platform area today.... not much there, although in the woods I did see something that looked like it was a ramp for vehicles, as would be in a mechanic's shop so one could work underneath the truck/whatever. The weeds near the radar buildings are damn near impassable, a machete/slingblade woulda been great to have.
