Is the poop deck really what I think it is?
| | TTC retires its oldest operating subway train < on 1/27/2012 5:22 PM >
| | | http://news.nation...-air-conditioning/
After 35 years in service and “a lot” of stops across Toronto, the oldest subway train in the TTC’s fleet, the last with bench seating and without air conditioning, was retired Friday morning. At 7:27 a.m., the H4 train left eastbound for Greenwood Station. From there it crossed the city twice on the Bloor-Danforth line. The train’s arrival at Kennedy Station after 9:00 a.m. was its last stop. “I don’t think anybody will miss the lack of air conditioning, but they were a good stable hard-working subway train, very reliable in its day,” said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross. “It’s progress, but it’s also some nostalgia on a day like today.” |
I didn't get a chance to ride it one last time, but it did remind me of my last time I got up close and personal with an H4; it had gotten a little dirty over the previous 11 years and the blistering heat inside was much worse than when it was actually in service.

| | | The old subway car interiors were much less bland than the new ones, having more colour with the panels of red, orange, and yellow, the wood veneer, and the faux-stone floors. The new ones have more gadgets like the electronic maps but are awash in a sea of white and grey. That's one aspect of these trains that I'm going to miss.

| | | Although they hold a certain amount of nostalgia, I won't miss them any more than I do the G or M cars. They were still horrible in the summer and rattled a ton. I hold the same dislike for Montreal's fleet of Metro cars, although to a lesser extent as they have made several attempts over the years to keep them fresh. I think I will probably miss the H5 cars most as their distinctive chopper control hum was a regular part of my childhood subway memories. | | | Has this train been retired to the same field as the others?

I don't think so. On one visit last year there was another newly-retired H4 sitting off the tracks but it was gone within a few days. Probably being shipped off right away for scrap. Edit: Unless you're talking about a different field... ? [last edit 2/1/2012 3:48 PM by skootles - edited 1 times]

| | | Pretty sure all of them are being moved to a scrapper in Hamilton now. I don't think you'll find any sitting around "that field" unless they have a future use, possibly as a work car.

| | | I also read somewhere that it was taken to Greenwood, which would mean it wouldn't go to "that field".

Future Enterprises off Strathearne Ave in Hamilton. They won the tender for disposing of the "H4" fleet. You can easily see them in their yard from the street. It's common knowledge.
Keep it fuzzy. |

| | | I remember those. I liked the seats on the old ones more than on the T series trains. [last edit 2/6/2012 1:46 AM by SwitchSwag - edited 1 times]
