| | | Recommendations in Cinci or Dayton OH < on 1/24/2012 2:29 AM >
| | | I am going on tour and have a day off in western OH. I know Cincy and Dayton are grimey places, not unlike the places I come from, and from driving through and playing in them, can see that they must have some gems. If anybody could recommend a good place or two to visit in this area would you please PM me and save me a few hours of research on google maps and all that. Thank you much. -D

| | | I suggest you just drive around. Not much is left in Dayton these days, but there is plenty in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. You'll find plenty.

I know cincy is pretty run down, and have a strong belief in the drive around tactic. The only factor against it in my context is being on a music tour with very little money so I am trying to keep driving to a minimum, and trying to have distinct destinations. but if it comes down to it, its gotta be done =)

| | | Consolidated Grain and Borman Engraving next door makes for a cool little location if crunched for time.

Carew Tower observation deck. Legal rooftop access for $2, little supervision.
_IGP9831 by itsbudda, on Flickr Crosley Building, easy access, boring, but very large and photogenic factory with lots of interesting graffiti and a tower.
_IGP0816 by itsbudda, on Flickr Glencoe Hole, neighborhood of 60+ abandoned row houses, heavy decay in some and sketchy floors, but prime location for exteriors and if you're into residential.

There's some Juicier locations, but I'd rather not post in a public thread. Same with addresses. Crosley building you can just find easily enough without leaving the highway, but Send a PM if you need more info. [last edit 1/25/2012 9:35 PM by budda - edited 1 times]

| | | Budda just about nailed the major locations. There's also Our Lady of Perpetual house, both a church and a school that are abandoned, but I don't now if they're still open. The school has a rather clumsy POE and, from what I've heard, is pretty boring inside.
Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing. |

| | | Drains are Dayton's coolest feature (IMO). River levels are way up, so that's out of the question for you, however.

| | | +1 for Crosley. Not much left inside but it's a really cool building and the roof is awesome! *EDIT* Does anyone recognize this place? Just a bunch of pictures of random stuff but you never know what will jog someones memory. 1

I don't remember where it was except that it as somewhere in Cinci. It was easily my favorite place in the area but I'm guessing it was since torn down. Can anyone confirm that? [last edit 2/27/2012 6:41 PM by Orangedrink - edited 1 times]

| | | Stearns and Foster mattress company, near the highway north of the city. Well guarded now I hear, and mostly still standing. A large part of it burnt down a few years back but half of the complex is unscathed. Never been inside personally. [last edit 2/28/2012 3:11 AM by budda - edited 1 times]

The property itself is abandoned, but there's a few active places close to it. On the south side there is some houses, to the east, right across the street, is some kind of business (auto shop I think). Also, the new school building is just a few hundred yards away to the north. I've been in twice, during summer when school's out, and have never had problems with people. I've even parked right behind the school. I would recommend parking at the new school and walking over.

| | | I was by this school yesterday and all the windows and doors have been removed from the north building; the same in the south building but all the openings are covered with plastic. Looks like asbestos remediation in preparation for demolition. Access to the north building would be very easy right now.

| | | I know the Cincinnati subway is generally regarded as being well locked up nowadays, but I hear every once in awhile someone busts in and the cops don't notice for a few weeks or months. Might want to do some research on that.

| | | Cincy has tons of places for a town of its size. I was there just to drive around (not for UE) for a few days and randomly stumbled upon plenty. The next day, a couple awesome UE friends happened to be passing through, so we hit up a bunch of them. Still had some left on the list when we ran out of time. Entry was a bit dodgy to several, but it ended up working out.

that's rather sad news. it is quite a beautiful place! so awesome seeing both sections of it and the noticeable history between the two.
